In English

Big Licks opened their doors in Glasgow in 2008, and a few years ago they expanded to Manchester, where they have made their mark on the city with their burgers, ice creams, desserts and milkshakes. We ordered their Double Smashed Angus Beef Burger with two 85-gram patties, cheese, shredded lettuce, red onion, dill pickles and burger sauce, as well as the Buttermilk Chicken Burger with fried chicken, cheese, shredded lettuce, dill pickles and ranch dressing. Our burgers cost 10.5 GBP (14 USD) each, and we also ordered their cajun fries for 4.5 GBP (6 USD). Unfortunately, we couldn’t order any milkshakes as their machine wasn’t working at the time, which in hindsight might have been a hint of how the meal would turn out.

Both of our burgers looked pretty simple and felt very light in our hands. The buns were flat and squashed, but at least they were warm and toasted on the inside. The patties had a nice crust, but when we took our first bite, we realised they were far too salty, which really lowered our overall impression. The shredded lettuce and red onion added a little crispiness, and their large pickles were at least nice and tangy. The Buttermilk Chicken Burger was considerably more boring and resembled chicken burgers from regular fast food restaurants, and the chicken itself was dry and chewy. Their cajun fries weren’t worth the effort either, as they were lukewarm and far from freshly cooked. The only thing we actually liked was the tasty Cajun seasoning, which gave everything some interesting heat.

Unfortunately, most things at Big Licks felt very sloppy and impersonal. Perhaps their milkshakes are worth a visit, but since we didn’t get to try them, we can’t really recommend anything on their menu.

🍔 Review № 1397

🇺🇸 @localtide ★★★★☆

Local Tide is a hyped fish restaurant in central Seattle. And while most of the menu focuses on seafood, their burger has also become a bit of a talking point. They don’t take reservations, and when we arrived there were around 20 people queuing outside the small restaurant, with an hour-long wait. Luckily, there was space next door at Aslan Brewing, which served their burger and a handful of other dishes from Local Tide. We ordered their Smash Burger with beef, cheese, caramelised onions and mayo in a brioche bun for 10 USD, as well as a portion of Salt and Pepper Fries for 8 USD. We also tried their Salmon Sando for 16 USD.

After waiting around an hour for our food, our burger arrived neatly presented on a small plate. The bun looked a little flat but was lighter and fluffier than we’d expected. The beef was incredibly juicy and well salted, while the cheese was both creamy and flavourful. The caramelised onions were packed with umami and really enhanced the flavour of the beef. Both the bun and beef had a decent crust, although both could’ve been cooked a little more. Our main critique was that the burger would’ve been even better with a few more crispy components, and perhaps a bit bigger. The fries were like potato wedges and were incredibly well cooked. The generous portion was crispy and well seasoned, and their homemade ketchup was really tasty. The 16 USD salmon burger also impressed us with its fresh salmon fillet, great textures and fresh flavours.

It’s great to see a seafood restaurant serving burgers as good as the ones at Local Tide. The other seafood dishes are of course also worth trying, but make sure to arrive early and be prepared to wait a while for your food.
