In English

Gorilla Burger Bar is a very popular burger joint in Tašmajdan Park in central Belgrade. When we tried them last year, however, we weren’t very impressed, as both the bread and the meat were a little dry. When we returned to the Belgrade Burger Festival in 2025, however, we received a completely different burger. Their Spicy Paradise contained cheddar, tomato, lettuce, marinated green onions, smoky jalapeños and hot sauce and cost 1,390 RSD (14 USD). When we received the burger, we were informed that the 150-gram patty was made from horse meat from their own farm. Well, at least it wasn’t gorilla meat.

After gathering our thoughts and taking our first bite, we were happy to find that this was a much better burger than last year. The horse meat was pink in the middle and offered a lot of taste with a venison-like flavour. It was well seasoned, and although it was quite lean, the texture was quite tender. We would have preferred a bit more crust though. The slightly too large bun was soft and squishy and held together well throughout the meal. The cheddar cheese was well melted and offered a pleasant creaminess, and the marinated green onions were tangy with a freshness that really stood out. We also appreciated that the burger offered a lot of heat from their smoked jalapeños and the hot sauce. Overall, the ratio between the different ingredients was also really well balanced.

We were pleasantly surprised by the horse meat burger at Gorilla Burger Bar, and the fact is that they had improved pretty much everything compared to our last visit. We know that they also have their own Black Angus cows, so next time we visit them, we’ll see if the improvement also includes their regular beef burgers.

Recension från 29 juli 2024

Recension skriven av Linus Josephson

29 juli 2024, Gorilla Burger Bar

Gorilla Burger Bar is located in Tašmajdan Park in the centre of Belgrade, and we had the chance to try their burgers at the Belgrade Burger Festival 2024. During the festival, they had six different burgers on their menu. Five of these had a thick 150 gram beef patty and one was a smashed version with smaller beef patties. We ordered their Americano burger with 150 grams of Black Angus beef, cheese, bacon, pickles, red onions and ketchup for 1300 RSD (12 USD).

Our burger reminded us of many of the other burgers we have tried in Serbia. It looked really big and especially the bun looked really sturdy. We immediately noticed that the large bun was dry, which immediately lowered our expectations. However, the juicy patty did give us a glimmer of hope and we appreciated the added barbecue flavour. But unfortunately, it was far too salty to save the burger. Other than the patty’s barbecue flavour and saltiness, the rest of the burger was very anonymous, and we struggled to identify any other flavours. We would have liked to see more of everything to really turn up the flavour profile and make our meal more exciting. The nail in the coffin was the floppy bacon which just added insult to injury.

We know that Gorilla Burger Bar’s burgers are popular in Serbia’s capital, but we weren’t impressed with what they served. We hope that they continue to work on the balance of ingredients and put the flavour picture better for next time, because with their beef they use there is plenty of potential to actually make a good burger.

Bar Luca is a cool and loud bar just a stone’s throw from the Opera House in central Sydney. They have been going viral for a while with one of their campaign burgers, which now has a permanent place on their menu. So when we were there, it was the obvious choice. The burger was called Blame Canada and consisted of a single beef patty, American cheese, maple syrup-glazed bacon, maple syrup aioli, poutine and fries inside the burger. The price was 20 AUD (14 USD).

Our burger still looked pretty good when it arrived, shiny from the maple syrup and with a patty with a decent crust. The beef tasted fine, even if it was a bit burnt in some places and would have benefited from a looser texture. The crown of the bun was a bit squashed, but it still held together surprisingly well and tasted great. The bacon was also unexpectedly crispy, and we liked the nice and flavourful maple syrup glaze. But it was very sweet overall with all the maple syrup, which literally dripped from the burger. This made the whole burger really sticky and quite difficult to handle – even if it also meant that we ate the whole thing at once. The fries that were under the patty itself were very soft and completely lacked crunch, probably because they were steamed by being placed directly in the burger. And we would have really preferred a bit larger cheese curds in the poutine, as the texture was a bit unappealing.

Blame Canada sounded very interesting on paper, and we can see why the burger has gone viral and become so popular. And even if everything was alright, it had too many technical mistakes to become a real favourite. But if you are in the mood for a sweet and sticky burger while listening to some loud music, Bar Luca is there for you.

Royal Stacks is a Melbourne-based burger chain that was founded in 2016 after their founder Dani travelled to the US and got a healthy dose of inspiration. They are still expanding, and currently have more than 10 restaurants that are decorated with plenty of well-known pop culture references. The five beef burgers on the menu are clearly inspired by Shake Shack, but with a slightly cooler attitude. We ordered a Bacon Bacon; a double burger with cheese, caramelised onions, double bacon, pickles, ketchup and mustard for 23 AUD (16.5 USD).

Our burger looked good, but we were a bit worried about the large amount of ketchup that was piled on top of the bacon. Fortunately, we were pleasantly surprised by how well the ketchup tied the flavours together, and the sweetness and intense tomato flavour really made their mark here. The beef patties were tender, tasty and well-seasoned, but the bun was a bit too soft and should have been toasted a lot more. Fortunately, it held everything together well, so it wasn’t a big problem. On the ingredients front, the cheese provided a welcome creaminess, and we also liked the strong dill flavour of the pickles – although we would have preferred them to be thicker sliced and to have had more of them. They were already gone halfway through the burger. The bacon was a bit too soft and would have benefited from being crisper, but despite the slightly pale appearance, it was cooked pretty well. The caramelised onions were also a bit too soft, and we would have preferred raw onions here for a more interesting texture. Overall, the burger had well-balanced proportions, although everything was a bit softer than we would have liked.

Royal Stacks is a nice Australian fast casual chain that serves well made and affordable burgers in a cool environment. They are definitely worth checking out the next time you’re in Melbourne.
