In English

When Smash Burgers Belgrade opened their first restaurant in Belgrade in 2021, they claimed to be the city’s first smash burger restaurant. Since then, they have expanded to three locations, and we tried their burgers for the first time during the Belgrade Burger Festival in 2024. Now we were back for the festival in 2025, where they offered the same menu as before. We once again opted for a double Western, consisting of two beef patties, Emmental cheese, crispy bacon, red onions, iceberg lettuce and western sauce for 890 RSD (8.5 USD).

Just like last time, our burger arrived wrapped in foil, which resulted in nicely melted cheese but also made the texture very soft. The beef was juicy, and even though we would have preferred a more distinct crust, we thought they had made great progress since last year’s visit. The bun was soft and springy, but it should have been toasted more on the inside for a better texture. The western sauce, which was a mixture of BBQ sauce and mayo, was better balanced this time and not as sweet. The bacon was crispy but didn’t add much flavour. Fortunately, the western sauce offered plenty of smokiness. Unfortunately, the lettuce and onion were cut far too thinly, and as they had been slightly steamed by the heat of the foil, they were very soft.

Smash Burgers Beograd continues to serve perfectly decent burgers, but even though it was a bit better this time, our score remains the same. We hope they continue to develop, because this is definitely a smash burger worth checking out next time you’re in Serbia’s capital.

Smash Burgers Beograd opened in 2021 in Belgrade, proudly calling themselves Belgrade’s first smash burger restaurant. They were well received by locals, and the hype has remained strong. They currently have three locations in the Serbian capital, but we took the opportunity to try them at the Belgrade Burger Festival 2024. The menu at the festival was the same as they have in their restaurants, and of the five burgers offered, we ordered a double Classic with cheddar, pickles, onions, mustard and ketchup and a double Western with Emmenthal cheese, bacon, red onion, iceberg lettuce and western sauce for 790 RSD (7.5 USD) each.

We stood and watched them fry our burgers, and were struck by how long the patties stayed on the griddle. It was clear that they did things in a different way than we are used to. The burgers were served well wrapped in aluminium foil, and felt steamed after unwrapping as everything was hot, soft and slightly moist. The beef had an evenly soft texture, and lacked a distinct crust. The Classic cheeseburger was quite well balanced with a clear acidity and nice textures from the pickles and onions, although the ketchup was a bit too prominent. The bacon on our Western was really good, but the sauce was mainly a really sweet bbq sauce that we weren’t super fond of.

The flavours were quite good, but at the same time, this was quite far from Swedish or American smash burgers. But we also see that Smash Burgers Beograd is actively trying to embrace the burger trends that have swept across Europe and much of the rest of the world, and we appreciate the ambition as the commitment is needed to drive development forward. If they just focus more on how they cook the meat, we will be even happier next time.

🍔 Review № 1381

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 @black_bear_burger ★★★★☆

Black Bear Burger is one of the veterans of the modern burger wave in England, and we have tried their burgers several times since our first review in 2017. Over the years, Black Bear Burger has received more and more attention and hype, both domestically and internationally, and today they are one of the most well-known burger restaurants in all of England. They have locations at nearly 10 places around London, and we visited their restaurant inside the Market Halls Victoria food hall and ordered their Double Miso Bacon Burger – the same burger that won them the National Burger of the Year 2025 award. The burger contained double patties, double cheese, smoked bacon and their miso butter mayo, and it cost 15.8 GBP (21 USD).

The burger looked exactly as we remembered it, with pre-formed patties and a pale bun covered in a generous layer of sesame seeds. The bun was soft and fluffy, but just like on our previous visits, we felt that the crust-like amount of sesame seeds took over both in terms of flavour and texture. The meat was of high quality as always and had a nice and potent dry-aged character that they are known for. The meat could have been juicier though, as it felt a bit too compact this time. The bacon was super tasty and crispy, just the way we like it, and the onion also contributed a nice texture. Their miso butter mayo was very flavourful with its buttery, salty, and umami-rich taste, but together with the bacon and the beef, the overall flavour profile was a bit too salty. We would have liked to see some kind of freshness to break up the saltiness for a more complete experience.

We are very happy that a veteran like Black Bear Burger continues to deliver high-quality burgers year after year, and they are still a safe bet when you are craving a really good burger in London.
