In English

We reviewed Toster Bar from Novi Sad for the first time last year. At the time, we thought they served decent burgers, but that the patties were overworked and everything felt a bit dated. Now that we visited the Belgrade Burger Festival 2025, we tried their Extra Cheese with 200 grams of dry aged beef, deep-fried mozzarella, lettuce, tomato and a blue cheese sauce for 1220 RSD (12 USD).

Just like last time, the burger came in a paper pocket with a skewer jabbed through everything. Why have a paper pocket that’s meant to prevent us from getting our hands sticky if they’re going to stick a skewer through everything anyway? In any case, the bun was very large, but fortunately soft and pliable. But after our first bite, we could tell that the patty unfortunately suffered from the same problem as last time. It was far too dense, resulting in a tough and compact texture. This time, the meat flavour wasn’t as distinct either, as the other ingredients took over the taste profile. We weren’t particularly fond of the blue cheese sauce either, which was reminiscent of a béchamel sauce. It neither elevated the burger nor made it more interesting. The best thing about the entire burger was the large, well-fried mozzarella croquette, which added some much-needed crispness and a creamy cheesiness. The lettuce was fresh, but didn’t make much of an impression otherwise.

Last year, we felt that Toster Bar’s burgers felt old-fashioned in both appearance and flavour profile, and this time it was even more sloppy and unrefined. We like that they use dry-aged meat, but they really should reassess how its handled and how they compose their burgers in order to let the beef shine.

Recension från 12 september 2024

Recension skriven av Marcus Sjöström

12 september 2024, Toster Bar

Toster Bar in Novi Sad has been around since 2015 and they currently have two restaurants in the city. We tried them at the Belgrade Burger Festival 2024 where they provided a festival menu with five different burgers – several of which were sold exclusively at the festival. We ordered a Cheddar and Bacon with cheddar, bacon, caramelised onions, pickles, salad, bbq sauce and. It was available with 150 grams of their regular meat for 880 RSD (8.5 USD) or with 200 grams of dry-aged beef for 1120 RSD (10.5 USD), and we chose the latter.

Our burger looked a bit old-fashioned with its thick beef patty and a thick layer of melted cheddar cheese. We’ve had very good burgers with that look before, but we’ve also had a fair share of really boring ones. Fortunately, the rather large brioche bun was warm and fluffy, and the meat had a really nice and distinct beefiness. The meat was overworked though, and we would have liked a lighter texture to really showcase the dry-aged beef. Our bacon was a bit unevenly cooked, but added a nice smoky flavour. The bbq sauce, pickles and caramelised onions were all quite sweet, but they worked really well together and also really well with the beef and bacon. And seeing as all the flavours worked well together, this was actually one of our favourite burgers of the festival.

Toster Bar is a veteran in the game, and this was quite apparent in their burgers. But despite some minor details, the burgers were still well cooked and tasted good enough to make them worth checking out the next time you’re craving a hamburger in Novi Sad.

🍔 Review № 1381

Black Bear Burger is one of the veterans of the modern burger wave in England, and we have tried their burgers several times since our first review in 2017. Over the years, Black Bear Burger has received more and more attention and hype, both domestically and internationally, and today they are one of the most well-known burger restaurants in all of England. They have locations at nearly 10 places around London, and we visited their restaurant inside the Market Halls Victoria food hall and ordered their Double Miso Bacon Burger – the same burger that won them the National Burger of the Year 2025 award. The burger contained double patties, double cheese, smoked bacon and their miso butter mayo, and it cost 15.8 GBP (21 USD).

The burger looked exactly as we remembered it, with pre-formed patties and a pale bun covered in a generous layer of sesame seeds. The bun was soft and fluffy, but just like on our previous visits, we felt that the crust-like amount of sesame seeds took over both in terms of flavour and texture. The meat was of high quality as always and had a nice and potent dry-aged character that they are known for. The meat could have been juicier though, as it felt a bit too compact this time. The bacon was super tasty and crispy, just the way we like it, and the onion also contributed a nice texture. Their miso butter mayo was very flavourful with its buttery, salty, and umami-rich taste, but together with the bacon and the beef, the overall flavour profile was a bit too salty. We would have liked to see some kind of freshness to break up the saltiness for a more complete experience.

We are very happy that a veteran like Black Bear Burger continues to deliver high-quality burgers year after year, and they are still a safe bet when you are craving a really good burger in London.
