Smash Market opened earlier this year in Bellevue, in northeast Gothenburg. We had received recommendations about them recently, so we prioritised a visit during our latest trip to the west coast. The restaurant was bright and inviting, and the menu featured seven beef burgers and a very appealing Korean chicken burger. But we finally decided to try two different beef burgers: a Triple Cheese with double beef patties, three slices of cheddar, pickles, sliced white onions, ketchup and mustard, and a Frater Meus with double beef patties, cheddar, chili cheese, lettuce, red onions, jalapeños and chili mayo.. The burgers cost 120 SEK (13 USD) each, and both french fries and a soft drink were included in the price.
We were served two really nice-looking burgers, and it was clear that they had been carefully prepared and assembled. The buns were well toasted on the inside and the patties had a nice crust, even though they could have been seasoned a little more with salt and pepper. However, we thought the flavours were a little subdued overall, and our Triple Cheese was very bread-heavy as it didn’t have that many other ingredients. We would have liked to see more onions, and perhaps a little mayo for balance, as our whole burger was a little too acidic. Frater Meus contained more ingredients and had a better ratio, but the flavours were a little too mild, and neither the chilli mayo nor the chilli cheese stood out. The french fries were crispy and nice, and we were happy that they were included in the price.
Smash Market serve perfectly fine burgers that are very affordable. We just hope they dare to be a little bolder with the flavours overall so that they manage to stand out a little more.
