After the successful summer of 2025 with Norrtäljes Egen Sommar, an initiative encouraging young people to create their own summer jobs, the hyped Messy Burgers food truck returned for the summer of 2026. The converted horse trailer travels around the area serving burgers, and when we found ourselves nearby we had to visit them. The menu was short and concise with five beef burgers, and we decided to try a Cheesus Christ with double cheese, yellow onions, pickles, mustard and ketchup, as well as The Gut Buster with cheese, lettuce, caramelised red onions, yellow onions, pickles and bacon mayo. Both burgers came with double 100-gram beef patties and cost 149 SEK (16 USD) each as meals with a soft drink, potato croquette fries and fries seasoning.
We sat down at the colourful tables and waited. The patties may not have had the glossy crust we had hoped for, but they were surprisingly tender, nicely salted and had a really juicy texture. The patties did extend a little too far beyond the bun, and we would have preferred better proportions. The bun was nicely toasted on top, but we would have liked more colour on the inside of both the crown and heel for better durability. The Cheesus Christ tasted like a more luxurious version of a classic McDonald’s cheeseburger, with distinct sweetness from the ketchup and exceptionally finely chopped yellow onions. However, we would have preferred a proper dill pickle instead of the sweet sandwich pickles. The Gut Buster had more nuanced flavours and was unexpectedly fresh. The chopped bacon in the mayo added both saltiness and crunch, giving the burger a nice lift. The potato croquette fries were another real surprise. Creamy inside, wonderfully crispy on the outside and generously seasoned. They certainly hadn’t held back on the seasoning either.
Messy Burgers serve good-value burgers, and we were impressed to see such young entrepreneurs having the confidence to pursue their own idea. We left the trailer with messy fingers and hoping they will return in 2027.
