Burgarna serverades som alltid invirade i aluminiumfolie, vilket kapslade in alla smaker i burgaren.

In English

Five Guys is one of the largest burger chains in the world, with almost 2,000 restaurants in more than 20 countries. We’ve tried their burgers in six countries by now, and even though the quality is good and the portions are large, the burgers have always been quite expensive. Now Five Guys have opened in Stockholm and Uppsala, and the concept is still that you get to choose a basic burger with cheese or bacon, and then choose freely between all the toppings. Our Cheeseburger with double beef patties, cheese, grilled onions, pickles, mayo, ketchup and mustard cost 159 SEK (15.5 USD), while our Bacon Cheeseburger with two beef patties, cheese, bacon, raw onions, jalapeños, pickles, mayo, mustard and ketchup cost 179 SEK (17.5 USD).

As always, the burgers came served wrapped in aluminium foil, which encapsulated all their flavours. And the result both looked and tasted like a big fast-casual burger with intense flavours without much finesse. The bun was soft and fought an uphill battle against all the juices and toppings, while the fresh, juicy patties had a nice texture but could have had more flavour. All the vegetables were fresh, and we particularly liked the pickles’ tangy acidity. Their milkshakes for 89 SEK (8.5 USD) were amazing, and we were given a choice of 10 different flavours. Our decadent and rich milkshake peanut butter and bacon milkshake was one of the best we’ve had. The fries were great too, as Five Guys is one of the few places that only use fresh fries and have no freezers at all. However, we would caution against their large fries, as a small portion for 59 SEK (5.5 USD) was more than enough for two people.

Despite the high prices, we think it’s great that Five Guys has given Sweden’s burger scene some new energy. The burgers are just as good here as they are in the rest of the world, and the large portions, fries and milkshakes are the main attraction.

Five Guys opened their first location in Virginia back in 1986, and during the last decade or so they’ve grown into the world’s largest premium burger chain with over 1700 restaurants worldwide. They still haven’t made it to Sweden, but when we tried them in New York and Los Angeles a few years back they were pretty good. But the burger scene is constantly evolving, so lately we’ve tried them again in the U.S., England and Germany to get an overview of their quality. One thing that makes Five Guys unique is that you order a hamburger, cheeseburger or a bacon burger and then get to add as many ingredients from the menu as you’d like, free of extra charge. So you can decide exactly what you want on your burger (and in your milkshake). Anyone up for a bacon milkshake?

We ordered double cheeseburger with french fries and a milkshake, and they cost about the same in their local currencies. The burgers cost approximately 8 USD/GBP, while the french fries and milkshakes cost around 5 USD/GBP each. Our hamburgers came wrapped in aluminum foil, but when we opened them up we were met with a sad sight. The vegetables had been assembled completely at random, the beef patties looked dull and bland and the processed cheese hadn’t been melted at all. Thankfully, it still tasted good enough for us to finish them, but they really weren’t worth the money.

But even though the burger let us down the rest of our meal was fantastic. Their french fries had been cooked in peanut oil and were golden, chunky and totally addictive. And their seriously thick and creamy milkshakes were perfection. So we still recommend a visit just for these items. We know that Five Guys have served us better burgers than this in the past, so we’ll check them out again during future travels. But until then we’re left with no other choice than to lower their grade.

Five Guys haven’t gone for the subtle approach, and both the restaurant itself and their fast food burger is a bit of a mess. Thankfully their burger is full of flavour, so don’t be too deterred by the shabby look. Just order a bacon cheeseburger with everything and enjoy.

🍔 Burgerdudes Summer BBQ Burger
4 portioner / 30 min

Du behöver:
800 g grovmald högrevsfärs, 20–30 % fetthalt
4 hamburgerbröd, gärna briochebröd
8 skivor hamburgerost
Sweet Baby Ray’s Original Barbecue Sauce
4 salladsblad
4 tomatskivor
1 rödlök
1 dl ättiksprit, 12 %
2 dl strösocker
3 dl vatten Smör
Salt och grovmald svartpeppar

Gör så här:

🇸🇪 @noahsburgare ★★★★★

We first visited N.O.A.H’s Burgare in Södertälje in 2024, and they’ve been high on our ranking of Sweden’s Best Burgers ever since. Their small white food truck has now been replaced by a much larger container, and the menu featured around ten burgers. We ordered our favourite, the Double Bacon Burger, with two 110-gram beef patties, cheddar, bacon, tomato, burger sauce and BBQ sauce for 138 SEK (14 USD). We also tried their SSK Meal, featuring a Bacon Jam Burger with a 135-gram beef patty, cheddar, bacon jam, pickles and Mac sauce. It cost 185 SEK (19 USD), including fries, a dip and a drink.

The burgers arrived quickly and looked just as inviting as we remembered. The Bacon Burger delivered crispy bacon and deep umami flavours, while the diced tomato worked surprisingly well with the other ingredients, adding both juiciness and a distinct texture. The Bacon Jam Burger had a pronounced sweetness and smokiness that we really enjoyed. The thicker beef patty had a crispy crust and a very juicy centre, and together with the generous amount of bacon jam, the proportions between the beef, toppings and bun were really good. However, the Mac sauce faded into the background and didn’t quite get a chance to shine. Both burgers were generously seasoned with salt and coarsely ground black pepper, and we particularly appreciated how they had adjusted the thickness of the patties to suit the toppings. The flavourful bacon jam worked perfectly with a thicker patty, while the classic Bacon Burger had better proportions with two thinner patties, each with an amazing crust. The fries were well-cooked and almost impossible to stop eating, and the included Mac dip paired really well with them.

N.O.A.H’s Burgare just keeps getting better with every visit, and they continue to impress from their small car park on the outskirts of Södertälje. If you love burgers, they’re definitely worth a detour.

🇺🇸 @familyfriend20671 ★★★★☆

Familyfriend is located in a residential neighbourhood in South Seattle and serves American comfort food and Guamanian fusion cuisine. They’ve been named the home of both Seattle’s best smashburger and corn soup, and the restaurant itself has a cosy interior with a large and airy courtyard. The menu consisted of small plates, medium plates and mains, and we ordered the only burger on the menu. The Da Kids Kewpie Burger came with beef, cheese, onions, pickles and miso and cost 20 USD, including a portion of Truffle Shoestring Fries. We also added an extra beef patty for another 5 USD.

The burger was served on a small plate and looked really cute. The beef was juicy with a crispy crust, but we would’ve appreciated more salt to make the flavours pop. The bun was nice and surprisingly airy, but should’ve been toasted harder on the inside. Ratio-wise, it worked really well with double beef, and we think a single would’ve been too bun-heavy. The diced onions were exceptionally crisp and flavourful without taking over, but they’d also diced the pickles, which made them feel more like relish. So even though the flavour was there, we missed their natural crunch, and the burger felt a little too soft overall. The flavours were simple but tasty, and we liked that they dared to keep the burger this simple. Their truffle fries were thinly cut and fried until crisp. Luckily, they’d only been lightly tossed in a fresh truffle oil, which added umami without taking over. We genuinely couldn’t stop eating them.

Familyfriend is a cosy little neighbourhood restaurant that’s well worth a visit. Come for the burger, but make sure to order several of the medium plates to share as well. We tried everything from tacos and empanadas to the burger and their corn soup – and the latter really did live up to its award.

🇸🇪 Burger House Homemade ★☆☆☆☆

Burger House Homemade is located right by the E18 outside Kristinehamn and is hard to miss from the road. The restaurant is decorated like a colourful American 1950s diner, with a large menu where the burgers come in several sizes. The prices were steep, with a burger containing 120 grams of beef costing 189 SEK (20 USD) and a 200-gram version a whopping 289 SEK (31 USD), meaning an extra 100 SEK (11 USD) for just 80 grams more beef. However, we struggled to find a burger where the ingredients felt thoughtfully put together. In the end, we ordered a Cheeseburger with 200 grams of beef, double cheddar, caramelised onions, tomato, lettuce, pickles and burger sauce. Fries were included, but with a soft drink the final bill came to well over 300 SEK (32 USD).

The burger was sloppily assembled and covered in sauce when it arrived. The two smashed patties, made from Swedish chuck, had a lightly grilled flavour, but they’d been pressed too hard and had a compact, chewy texture. The beef was also oversalted and tasted really dull. In contrast, the burger sauce, onions and, strangely enough, even the pickles were very sweet, and none of the flavours worked particularly well together. The lettuce had been placed underneath the beef, where the heat had turned it translucent and limp. The sesame bun had been coloured yellow with turmeric and grilled hard on the outside in a sandwich press, while the inside was left almost completely untoasted. This made it soggy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. The result was a messy burger with poorly handled beef at an outrageously high price. The fries were at least okay and the portion was very filling, but that was the only positive part of the meal.

Burger House Homemade felt more like a trap for hungry motorists than a craft burger place with homemade burgers, and we found nothing that justified the unreasonably high prices. We recommend holding out a little longer and finding something tastier and better value further down the road if you’re craving a burger on your journey.
