🇺🇸 @boardedupburgers ★★★★☆
Boarded Up by Chubbies Burgers is located in Kaimuki in Honolulu, just northeast of Waikiki. This small restaurant has a handful of tables and a small outdoor patio, and the menu features four burgers. We ordered their signature 1950s Burger with double beef patties, American cheese, shredded lettuce, relish, tomato and 1950s sauce for 15 USD and a Cheeseburger with just a single beef patty and American cheese for 7 USD. Plus crincle cut fries for 5 USD.
Our burgers looked really good with a nice crust. The 85-gram beef patties were nicely smashed and offered a lot of flavour – even if we would have preferred a bit more pepper and a bit less salt. But the 1950s burger had an excellent meat flavour, and the ratios in a double patty burger was spot on. The vegetables were fresh and enhanced the summery flavours of the classic burger. The bun was fresh with a nice springy texture, and the Cheeseburger was excellent in its simplicity. The flavours really popped when we added some ketchup and mustard though, so it was perhaps a bit too simple for its own good, especially seeing as the menu already was so short. But we appreciated that all four burgers had their own style. Their crincle cut fries were okay, but were enhanced by the 1 USD Carolina Dijon dip, which added loads of taste but not as much heat as we’d expected. We also recommend their own refreshing lemonades for 5 USD – especially the one with tart calamansi citrus.
Boarded Up by Chubbies Burgers serve excellent smash burgers strongly inspired by the US West Coast. They are definitely worth a detour the next time you’re in Hawai’i and leave central Honolulu, perhaps to visit Diamond Head or Hanauma Bay.

🇸🇪 Vegabaren ★★☆☆☆
Vegabaren, located in Haninge just south of Stockholm, is Sweden’s oldest burger restaurant. Erik Engström started serving ‘flattened meatballs’ (since burgers were not allowed to be sold from grill kiosks) as early as 1957, and a year later he opened Sweden’s first drive-in. Vegabaren itself opened in 1964, and has since become both an institution and a historical landmark in Swedish burger history, and we actually reviewed them for the first time back in 2016. When we returned to the restaurant it felt like time had stood still, with old newspaper clippings, information leaflets and the typical colour scheme of the furniture. We tested their classic Sambalburger once again, where sambal oelek is mixed into the beef patty. The burger was served with lettuce, tomato, roasted onions and béarnaise sauce, and a menu with a soft drink and french fries cost 145 SEK (16 USD).
Our burger was served quickly on a large red plastic tray, like always. The burger was huge and we took a big bite right away. Just like before, the patty was pretty compact and quite chewy, but we appreciated the slightly sweet heat from the sambal together with the otherwise pretty mild flavours. The bun was quite crumbly, and had a hard time holding together throughout the meal. The shredded lettuce provided some crunch, even though we would have preferred to skip the wet tomato. The combination of roasted onions and béarnaise sauce was classic and worked well here, but there was almost too much sauce. The fries were crispy, and we appreciated the seasoning they were covered with, even though we would have preferred it to be more evenly distributed over the whole portion.
Everything at Vegabaren is the same, and even though we would have liked juicier beef, they still have earned their place in the history books of the Swedish burger scene. We respect Vegabaren’s contribution immensely, even though their sausages and classic Swedish comfort food might be a safer bet once you’ve tried the sambal burger.

🇦🇺 @elmosburgers ★★★☆☆
Elmo’s is located in North Fitzroy in Melbourne, and the owner James, who previously lived in the US and Europe, started this burger joint to introduce ultra-smashed burgers to the Australian burger scene. The menu was short and sweet with only two burgers – the original House burger and the slightly more exotic Classic which we ordered. It contained double beef patties, cheese, fried onions, pickles and Elmo’s sauce for 19 AUD (13.5 USD). We also ordered a portion of french fries for 6 AUD (4 USD).
The burgers reminded us of the French burger wave (spearheaded by the likes of Dumbo and Junk). The restaurant had an open kitchen, and we could see that they smashed the meat very thin. So we were a bit worried that the edges would be too crispy, but fortunately the patties had nice crispy lacy edges with a bit of structure in the middle. The meat was surprisingly tender and tasty, but despite the bun being well toasted it quickly became very soft and flat. The fried onions were also good, but the classic burger sauce would have benefited from a bit more complexity to make everything a bit more interesting. Thankfully, we really enjoyed the crunch and flavour of the pickles. Overall, this was a good burger, but we were missing something with more depth to make it stand out a bit more. Their fries were well-cooked, tasty and yummy.
Elmo’s serve a decent ultra-smashed burger, but we wish they had dared to do something a bit more memorable – especially considering that their menu only contains two burgers.
