Henry’s Burger is a small chain in Tokyo with restaurants in Harajuku, Daikanyama and Jiyugaoka. We’ve been fans of their burgers in the Japanese capital since our first visit in 2017, and have been to their Daikanyama restaurant several times since then. Not much had changed since our last visit in 2022 when we returned this time, and the reassuringly unchanged menu was largely the same, except for the addition of a new pork burger. We ordered a Double Wagyu Beef Burger with two smashed wagyu beef patties, cheese, lettuce and house sauce, along with french fries and a soft drink for 2510 JPY (16 USD).
The burger looked exactly as we remembered it, with a well-balanced ratio between the nicely smashed beef patties and the house baked, golden-brown bun The bun was squishy and fit great in our hand, holding everything together perfectly. As expected, their self-ground wagyu beef was very juicy with a nice sear that gave way to a wonderfully airy inside that we really enjoyed. The buttery beef flavour was great, although we would have liked a bit more salt to elevate the flavour profile. We also felt that the house sauce added a lot of character to the burger, with a nice flavour profile that felt like it was from the West Coast of the US. The lettuce was fresh, but unfortunately the tomato was cold and a bit too thickly sliced for our taste. And the airy bun and the tender beef made the entire burger was quite soft. Something with a bit more crunchy texture would have really elevated the burger, such as dill pickles or onions. The fries were really tasty and were both salted and cooked to perfection.
Henry’s Burger still serve Tokyo’s best burger. We appreciate that the inspiration comes from the West Coast of the US, rather than the domestic burger scene, and that they stick to their vision of serving simple but high-quality burgers.
