In English

Box Café & Grill is located in Sipoo in eastern Helsinki, and opened back in 2017. We have received a lot of tips about them from both Swedish and Finnish readers, so we were really looking forward to a visit. So when we ran into them during the Burger Lovers Festival 2023, we were of course delighted. There they served three different sliders. We ordered one of each; a Box Diablo with cheddar, bacon, chilli jam, lettuce, red onion and habanero mayo, a Box Cheese with cheddar, lettuce, tomato and garlic mayo and a Box Napoli with cheddar, salami, tomato sauce, lettuce and basil mayo. They cost 9-10 EUR each, while most of the full-size burgers at their real restaurant cost 13-14 EUR.

It’s always difficult to judge a restaurant’s quality when the festival burgers are so different from the original, but here the chef had cooked the meat in advance and then reheated it before serving. This made the meat on all our burgers really dull and chewy. The bun was also dry, with a hard crust running along the edge, and none of our burgers were particularly nice. The worst of the lot was our Box Cheese, with floppy and unappetising bacon. Funnily enough, the large tomato slice provided some much-needed juiciness. The Box Diablo had a nice heat that saved it from disaster, but overall there wasn’t much to cheer about.

Box Café & Grill may serve better burgers in their restaurant, but with such poor execution, we’re not too keen on heading out to Sipoo the next time we’re in Finland.

🍔 Review № 1397

🇺🇸 @localtide ★★★★☆

Local Tide is a hyped fish restaurant in central Seattle. And while most of the menu focuses on seafood, their burger has also become a bit of a talking point. They don’t take reservations, and when we arrived there were around 20 people queuing outside the small restaurant, with an hour-long wait. Luckily, there was space next door at Aslan Brewing, which served their burger and a handful of other dishes from Local Tide. We ordered their Smash Burger with beef, cheese, caramelised onions and mayo in a brioche bun for 10 USD, as well as a portion of Salt and Pepper Fries for 8 USD. We also tried their Salmon Sando for 16 USD.

After waiting around an hour for our food, our burger arrived neatly presented on a small plate. The bun looked a little flat but was lighter and fluffier than we’d expected. The beef was incredibly juicy and well salted, while the cheese was both creamy and flavourful. The caramelised onions were packed with umami and really enhanced the flavour of the beef. Both the bun and beef had a decent crust, although both could’ve been cooked a little more. Our main critique was that the burger would’ve been even better with a few more crispy components, and perhaps a bit bigger. The fries were like potato wedges and were incredibly well cooked. The generous portion was crispy and well seasoned, and their homemade ketchup was really tasty. The 16 USD salmon burger also impressed us with its fresh salmon fillet, great textures and fresh flavours.

It’s great to see a seafood restaurant serving burgers as good as the ones at Local Tide. The other seafood dishes are of course also worth trying, but make sure to arrive early and be prepared to wait a while for your food.
