In English

Pretty Boy Wingery started out as a food truck in Helsinki in the summer of 2021, and have grown rapidly. At the time of writing, they have six permanent restaurants in Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Tampere – as well as a presence at Helsinki Airport. We visited their restaurant in Kamppi, which was quite small and decorated in a quirky and rocky style with neon details. The menu included five different burgers, with a choice of fried chicken, smashed beef or a vegan patty. We visited during lunch and could only choose one beef burger, which turned out to be their Blue Cheese Burger with cheddar, blue cheese, red onions, lettuce, pickles and aioli. A lunch burger with french fries cost a reasonable 10 euros (11 USD).

The burger gave a strange impression with its unmelted cheese, but our first bite had nice textures and a distinct buttery flavour that had us slightly under its spell. The butteriness may have come from the bread, which was light and fluffy with a crunch from both sesame seeds on the outside and a buttery toasted inside. The somewhat oversalted meat was nicely cooked, although the crust could have been deeper. The thin slice of blue cheese and the mild aioli stayed in the background and interacted much better than we expected. The amount of lettuce was a little excessive, but the thinly sliced red onions provided a appreciated freshness. The burger was decent enough, but it was overshadowed by our fries. These thick potato potato sticks had a surface that reminded us of well-cooked sweet potato fries. They were distinctly crispy on the outside, and pleasantly creamy on the inside. And it was impossible to stop eating them.

It’s clear that Pretty Boy Wingery have designed everything with fried chicken in mind. Their smash burger was good, and for our next visit we’ll explore the chicken menu as well. And the fries. Oh, how we miss those fries.

🍔 Review № 1381

Black Bear Burger is one of the veterans of the modern burger wave in England, and we have tried their burgers several times since our first review in 2017. Over the years, Black Bear Burger has received more and more attention and hype, both domestically and internationally, and today they are one of the most well-known burger restaurants in all of England. They have locations at nearly 10 places around London, and we visited their restaurant inside the Market Halls Victoria food hall and ordered their Double Miso Bacon Burger – the same burger that won them the National Burger of the Year 2025 award. The burger contained double patties, double cheese, smoked bacon and their miso butter mayo, and it cost 15.8 GBP (21 USD).

The burger looked exactly as we remembered it, with pre-formed patties and a pale bun covered in a generous layer of sesame seeds. The bun was soft and fluffy, but just like on our previous visits, we felt that the crust-like amount of sesame seeds took over both in terms of flavour and texture. The meat was of high quality as always and had a nice and potent dry-aged character that they are known for. The meat could have been juicier though, as it felt a bit too compact this time. The bacon was super tasty and crispy, just the way we like it, and the onion also contributed a nice texture. Their miso butter mayo was very flavourful with its buttery, salty, and umami-rich taste, but together with the bacon and the beef, the overall flavour profile was a bit too salty. We would have liked to see some kind of freshness to break up the saltiness for a more complete experience.

We are very happy that a veteran like Black Bear Burger continues to deliver high-quality burgers year after year, and they are still a safe bet when you are craving a really good burger in London.
