ACE Smash Burgers

The French city of Strasbourg is located on the German border, and when we recently passed through, we took the opportunity to visit the burger joint ACE Smash Burgers, which opened in late 2022. The stylishly decorated premises offered a suitably stripped-down menu, with two beef burgers and a veggie option. We ordered both meat burgers; a Classic Burger with two 70-gram patties, double American cheese, onions, pickles, ketchup and mustard, and a Secret Burger with the same meat and cheese, but with pickles, iceberg lettuce and a secret sauce. The price for this was 11 EUR (11.5 USD) each, plus 3 EUR (3 USD) for a menu with fries and a soft drink.

Our burgers looked really nice, and they also felt really good when we picked them up. The first thing that struck us was the distinct meat flavour and an almost perfect crust. The buttery brioche bun from a local bakery was a perfect match and showed that they hadn’t taken any shortcuts with the ingredients. The American cheese added a lot of creaminess, but it didn’t really stand out and we would have appreciated another slice or two. Their house pickles provided a much-needed acidity that cut through the fatty flavours. They really came into their own in our Special Burger, where they added a lot of balance to the secret sauce, which tasted like a garlicky and slightly more adult Thousand Island dressing. Super tasty and well-balanced. We would have preferred slightly larger and more well-seasoned patties, but overall we were very pleased. Their double-cooked fries were amazing, and among the best we’ve had in a long time.

ACE Smash Burgers is definitely Strasbourg’s best burger joint, and they’re actually one of the best burger places we’ve visited in all of France.

🍔 Review № 1397

🇺🇸 @localtide ★★★★☆

Local Tide is a hyped fish restaurant in central Seattle. And while most of the menu focuses on seafood, their burger has also become a bit of a talking point. They don’t take reservations, and when we arrived there were around 20 people queuing outside the small restaurant, with an hour-long wait. Luckily, there was space next door at Aslan Brewing, which served their burger and a handful of other dishes from Local Tide. We ordered their Smash Burger with beef, cheese, caramelised onions and mayo in a brioche bun for 10 USD, as well as a portion of Salt and Pepper Fries for 8 USD. We also tried their Salmon Sando for 16 USD.

After waiting around an hour for our food, our burger arrived neatly presented on a small plate. The bun looked a little flat but was lighter and fluffier than we’d expected. The beef was incredibly juicy and well salted, while the cheese was both creamy and flavourful. The caramelised onions were packed with umami and really enhanced the flavour of the beef. Both the bun and beef had a decent crust, although both could’ve been cooked a little more. Our main critique was that the burger would’ve been even better with a few more crispy components, and perhaps a bit bigger. The fries were like potato wedges and were incredibly well cooked. The generous portion was crispy and well seasoned, and their homemade ketchup was really tasty. The 16 USD salmon burger also impressed us with its fresh salmon fillet, great textures and fresh flavours.

It’s great to see a seafood restaurant serving burgers as good as the ones at Local Tide. The other seafood dishes are of course also worth trying, but make sure to arrive early and be prepared to wait a while for your food.
