In English

Janana Burger is a modern and cosy burger restaurant in the heart of Amsterdam. The menu is concise to say the least with just one burger and two vegetarian options plus a few different sides. Unsurprisingly, the only choice for us was the Beef Smashburger, which contained two smashed local beef patties, Irish cheddar, lettuce and a horseradish aioli in a milk bun. It cost 14 EUR (15 USD), and we also ordered a portion of bacon jam for 4 EUR (4.5 USD).

Our burger looked very inviting, and we particularly liked the fluffy and glossy bun. The beef stuck out quite a bit, but after the first bite we could immediately tell that the proportions were well balanced. We were greeted by a lovely crust and a distinct and delicious beefiness that really showed off its high quality. And despite the deep crust, the meat remained very juicy, and it was also well-seasoned. The bun that they bake daily in the small restaurant was soft, but still had just the right amount of bounciness and a well-balanced flavour. The cheddar cheese had melted perfectly and its clear and distinct character made it better than a regular burger cheese. But the best flavour came from the horseradish aioli with its spicy kick. However, we missed something that added a little more texture and acidity, as this would have created an even better balance. The bacon jam added a lot of great flavour, but it was a bit too pricey.

It’s obvious that the owner is a real burger enthusiast given all the homemade high quality ingredients. Don’t miss Janana Burger next time you’re in Amsterdam, because here you’ll get one of the best burgers in the Dutch capital.

🍔 Review № 1381

Black Bear Burger is one of the veterans of the modern burger wave in England, and we have tried their burgers several times since our first review in 2017. Over the years, Black Bear Burger has received more and more attention and hype, both domestically and internationally, and today they are one of the most well-known burger restaurants in all of England. They have locations at nearly 10 places around London, and we visited their restaurant inside the Market Halls Victoria food hall and ordered their Double Miso Bacon Burger – the same burger that won them the National Burger of the Year 2025 award. The burger contained double patties, double cheese, smoked bacon and their miso butter mayo, and it cost 15.8 GBP (21 USD).

The burger looked exactly as we remembered it, with pre-formed patties and a pale bun covered in a generous layer of sesame seeds. The bun was soft and fluffy, but just like on our previous visits, we felt that the crust-like amount of sesame seeds took over both in terms of flavour and texture. The meat was of high quality as always and had a nice and potent dry-aged character that they are known for. The meat could have been juicier though, as it felt a bit too compact this time. The bacon was super tasty and crispy, just the way we like it, and the onion also contributed a nice texture. Their miso butter mayo was very flavourful with its buttery, salty, and umami-rich taste, but together with the bacon and the beef, the overall flavour profile was a bit too salty. We would have liked to see some kind of freshness to break up the saltiness for a more complete experience.

We are very happy that a veteran like Black Bear Burger continues to deliver high-quality burgers year after year, and they are still a safe bet when you are craving a really good burger in London.
