Smash Buddies

In English

Smash Buddies is a fairly newly opened burger joint in the Norwegian town of Askim, located between Oslo and the Swedish border. The small burger shack is considered to be the best in the city, and when we visited the small venue we found a menu with a handful of smash burgers, crepes and Belgian waffles. On the burger front, they had some not so interesting options including red, green and blue buns (although Taki’s Smash sounded nice), but we eventually opted for a The O.G. with two beef patties, double cheddar, caramelised onions and their smash sauce. It cost 125 NOK (12 USD), and we upgraded to a combo with fries and a soft drink for an additional 50 NOK (5 USD).

Our burger came in a takeaway bag, wrapped in aluminium foil, and although they weren’t needed, we enjoyed getting a pair of black plastic gloves. The crust on the patties was more burnt than smashed, and it would have really benefited from having a crispier surface. The beef was also incredibly oversalted, to the point where finishing our meal became a bit of a chore. The brioche bun wasn’t squishy enough and had cracks here and there, and it didn’t bounce back where we had held it. The onions were also more fried than caramelised, but we actually preferred this tastewise. The melted cheese and the smash dressing didn’t really do much, and the overall flavour profile was a bit dull. The highlight of our meal turned out to be their thick cut fries, which were well cooked and covered in a really tasty cajun-like seasoning.

Unfortunately, Smash Buddies made too many mistakes for us to recommend a visit. Still, it’s great to see that smash burgers are becoming popular in Norway, and we look forward to exploring their burger scene further in the future.

🍔 Review № 1397

🇺🇸 @localtide ★★★★☆

Local Tide is a hyped fish restaurant in central Seattle. And while most of the menu focuses on seafood, their burger has also become a bit of a talking point. They don’t take reservations, and when we arrived there were around 20 people queuing outside the small restaurant, with an hour-long wait. Luckily, there was space next door at Aslan Brewing, which served their burger and a handful of other dishes from Local Tide. We ordered their Smash Burger with beef, cheese, caramelised onions and mayo in a brioche bun for 10 USD, as well as a portion of Salt and Pepper Fries for 8 USD. We also tried their Salmon Sando for 16 USD.

After waiting around an hour for our food, our burger arrived neatly presented on a small plate. The bun looked a little flat but was lighter and fluffier than we’d expected. The beef was incredibly juicy and well salted, while the cheese was both creamy and flavourful. The caramelised onions were packed with umami and really enhanced the flavour of the beef. Both the bun and beef had a decent crust, although both could’ve been cooked a little more. Our main critique was that the burger would’ve been even better with a few more crispy components, and perhaps a bit bigger. The fries were like potato wedges and were incredibly well cooked. The generous portion was crispy and well seasoned, and their homemade ketchup was really tasty. The 16 USD salmon burger also impressed us with its fresh salmon fillet, great textures and fresh flavours.

It’s great to see a seafood restaurant serving burgers as good as the ones at Local Tide. The other seafood dishes are of course also worth trying, but make sure to arrive early and be prepared to wait a while for your food.
