Pommes frites ingick i priset.

In English

Soul Coffee Beer is located in Paiporta, on the southern outskirts of Valencia, and when we visited in spring 2023, we were blown away by their beef, rich sauces and fluffy buns. We named them one of the world’s best burgers and second best in Spain. Returning with sky-high expectations, we ordered two of their hamburgers: a Notorious with two 120-gram beef patties, smoked cheddar, bacon, pickles and their own burger sauce for 14.5 EUR (16 USD), and a Hey Ryan with a 200-gram beef patty, smoked cheddar, bacon jam, fried onions and a gochujang mayo for 15.5 EUR (17 USD). French fries were included in the price.

Our burgers were not as messy as during our last visit, which we appreciated. The beef was, if possible, even more intense in flavour, and in fact tasted even deeper than the 45 days listed on their menu. The texture still reminded us of warm butter, while still retaining distinct medium rare centre. The bun was incredibly fluffy, and held together throughout the meal – thanks in large part to the smaller amount of sauce. The sauces still shone through with their distinct flavours, especially Hey Ryan’s gochujang mayo – inspired by Pizza Loves Emily – which offered an incredible balance of heat, sweetness and acidity, without detracting from the lovely meatiness. However, the bacon jam didn’t provide the same distinct textural difference as the crispy bacon in the Notorious, which had a wonderful texture and a distinct smokiness. Along with the pickles and burger sauce, this is one of the most luxurious bacon burgers in the world.

Soul Coffee Beer serve a world-class burgers, and now that they have opened their second restaurant in the centre of Valencia, we highly recommend you book a table there and enjoy their creations. But don’t expect any coffee, because apparently they don’t serve any. Oh well, we think we’ll manage anyway.

Pommes frites ingick i priset.

Located in Paiporta, in the southern outskirts of Valencia, Soul Coffee Beer were voted Spain’s best burger in 2022 by the Spanish burger critic Joe Burgerchallenge. Our expectations were high, but it turned out that they were fully booked when we arrived. Fortunately, we could order takeaway burgers and eat them right outside the restaurant. We ordered two hamburgers; a Notorious with two 120-gram 45-day dry-aged beef patties, smoked cheddar, bacon, pickles and their own burger sauce for 14.5 EUR (15.5 USD) and an Emmy-nem with a 200-gram 45-day dry-aged beef patty, English cheddar, caramelised onions and a Korean gochujang sauce for 14 EUR (15 USD). French fries were included in the price.

Our burgers were super saucy, and we wondered how we were going to be able to eat them with any semblance of dignity. The first bite was a pure taste explosion, and the intense flavour and light texture of the meat was almost like eating warm butter as it was so juicy. The patties had a great crust and a perfect medium rare centre. The fantastic quality of the burgers was obvious, and we had a hard time taking a break to gather our thoughts. The bun was nicely toasted and a real team player that didn’t stand out too much, but towards the end of the meal it started to reach its limit. The caramelised onions were sweet and tasty, and went really well with the spicy gochujang sauce in our Emmy-nem, while our Notorious was a perfect classic cheeseburger with crispy bacon and a crunchy pickle that really stood out.

We left Soul Coffee Beer full, satisfied and with sauce covered hands. This was a five-star hamburger, and one of our favourite burgers in Spain. You really need to pay them a visit, but make sure that you book a table in advance.

Bar Luca is a cool and loud bar just a stone’s throw from the Opera House in central Sydney. They have been going viral for a while with one of their campaign burgers, which now has a permanent place on their menu. So when we were there, it was the obvious choice. The burger was called Blame Canada and consisted of a single beef patty, American cheese, maple syrup-glazed bacon, maple syrup aioli, poutine and fries inside the burger. The price was 20 AUD (14 USD).

Our burger still looked pretty good when it arrived, shiny from the maple syrup and with a patty with a decent crust. The beef tasted fine, even if it was a bit burnt in some places and would have benefited from a looser texture. The crown of the bun was a bit squashed, but it still held together surprisingly well and tasted great. The bacon was also unexpectedly crispy, and we liked the nice and flavourful maple syrup glaze. But it was very sweet overall with all the maple syrup, which literally dripped from the burger. This made the whole burger really sticky and quite difficult to handle – even if it also meant that we ate the whole thing at once. The fries that were under the patty itself were very soft and completely lacked crunch, probably because they were steamed by being placed directly in the burger. And we would have really preferred a bit larger cheese curds in the poutine, as the texture was a bit unappealing.

Blame Canada sounded very interesting on paper, and we can see why the burger has gone viral and become so popular. And even if everything was alright, it had too many technical mistakes to become a real favourite. But if you are in the mood for a sweet and sticky burger while listening to some loud music, Bar Luca is there for you.

Royal Stacks is a Melbourne-based burger chain that was founded in 2016 after their founder Dani travelled to the US and got a healthy dose of inspiration. They are still expanding, and currently have more than 10 restaurants that are decorated with plenty of well-known pop culture references. The five beef burgers on the menu are clearly inspired by Shake Shack, but with a slightly cooler attitude. We ordered a Bacon Bacon; a double burger with cheese, caramelised onions, double bacon, pickles, ketchup and mustard for 23 AUD (16.5 USD).

Our burger looked good, but we were a bit worried about the large amount of ketchup that was piled on top of the bacon. Fortunately, we were pleasantly surprised by how well the ketchup tied the flavours together, and the sweetness and intense tomato flavour really made their mark here. The beef patties were tender, tasty and well-seasoned, but the bun was a bit too soft and should have been toasted a lot more. Fortunately, it held everything together well, so it wasn’t a big problem. On the ingredients front, the cheese provided a welcome creaminess, and we also liked the strong dill flavour of the pickles – although we would have preferred them to be thicker sliced and to have had more of them. They were already gone halfway through the burger. The bacon was a bit too soft and would have benefited from being crisper, but despite the slightly pale appearance, it was cooked pretty well. The caramelised onions were also a bit too soft, and we would have preferred raw onions here for a more interesting texture. Overall, the burger had well-balanced proportions, although everything was a bit softer than we would have liked.

Royal Stacks is a nice Australian fast casual chain that serves well made and affordable burgers in a cool environment. They are definitely worth checking out the next time you’re in Melbourne.
