The Ox Burger

How Much is Enough?

In English

The Ox Burger is located in Mislata just outside central Valencia and focuses on dry-aged beef, which was obvious when we stepped into the stylish restaurant with its large dry-ageing fridges. The menu featured around ten burgers, and we ordered three of them to try the different types of beef. La Sagrada featured 60-day dry-aged beef for 12.5 EUR (14 USD), Luxuria had beef dry-aged for an astounding 500 days for 29 EUR (34 USD) and the extravagant Miyazaki Gyu was made with Japanese wagyu and topped with thinly sliced ox picanha dry-aged for 200 days for 42 EUR (49 USD).

La Sagrada was excellent, with both the gochujang sauce and the beef bringing plenty of flavour without taking over. The 200-gram beef patty was very flavourful, although slightly chewy around the edges. Luxuria took the beef flavour to a completely different level. The 500-day dry-aged beef had an extremely intense and concentrated flavour that reminded us of Paul Finch at Hundred Burgers. At the same time, the lengthy ageing process made the beef a little dry and chewy despite being served rare, and we struggled to see any real benefits from those additional 400 days. Miyazaki Gyu was even more decadent, if anything, with incredibly flavourful wagyu, while the picanha added an interesting flavour and texture that elevated the experience. The recurring problem, however, was that the bun was quite dry and crumbly on all three burgers, which detracted from the overall experience, while the cheese also brought things down slightly. The cheddar cream on La Sagrada was good but rather messy, and the cheese on Luxuria formed a thick blanket over the beef. Miyazaki Gyu was also fairly difficult to eat.

The Ox Burger shows how exceptional beef can elevate the experience, but also that it doesn’t guarantee complete success. The heavily dry-aged beef and picanha made for some exciting beef experiences, and even the cheapest burger shone. The expensive luxury ingredients were really something special, but we would’ve preferred to see even more focus on the burger as a whole.

Burger Devil is located in Bäckby on the outskirts of Västerås, and when we first visited them in 2023 after several recommendations, we were pleasantly surprised by the high quality. During our return visit, we noticed that the restaurant had a thoughtfully designed interior, with almost every little detail featuring their branding. This time, we ordered a Cheese with two 120-gram beef patties, cheddar, red onions, pickles, yellow mustard, ketchup and mayo, as well as a Habanero Cheese with the same amount of beef, cheddar, habanero cheese, white onions, fresh chilli and béarnaise sauce. Both double burgers cost 189 SEK (19 USD) each as meals, including fries and a soft drink.

The burgers were nicely presented in paper sleeves and well assembled, with a good patty to bun ratio – even though our Habanero Cheese was a bit overloaded with toppings. The buns held everything together well, with a soft exterior and a nicely toasted interior. The beef was heavily smashed with a nice crust and generous seasoning that gave it a rich and robust flavour. However, we would have liked more heat from the Habanero Cheese, especially considering its name. And while we appreciated the idea of adding béarnaise sauce, the flavours became somewhat monotonous towards the end, and we would have liked something fresh to break things up. The fried habanero and cheese balls added a really nice contrast in texture, though, and overall it was a very enjoyable burger. The cheeseburger was also good at its core, but the flavours were slightly too sweet. We would have really appreciated some tangy dill pickles here to create a better balance. The fries were well-fried and nicely salted, but the dips we ordered could have had a bit more flavour.

Burger Devil has a well-developed concept, and they continue to serve filling and well-made burgers at very reasonable prices. Despite a few minor flaws, that still goes a long way.

🍔 Burgerdudes Summer BBQ Burger
4 portioner / 30 min

Du behöver:
800 g grovmald högrevsfärs, 20–30 % fetthalt
4 hamburgerbröd, gärna briochebröd
8 skivor hamburgerost
Sweet Baby Ray’s Original Barbecue Sauce
4 salladsblad
4 tomatskivor
1 rödlök
1 dl ättiksprit, 12 %
2 dl strösocker
3 dl vatten Smör
Salt och grovmald svartpeppar

Gör så här:

We first visited N.O.A.H’s Burgare in Södertälje in 2024, and they’ve been high on our ranking of Sweden’s Best Burgers ever since. Their small white food truck has now been replaced by a much larger container, and the menu featured around ten burgers. We ordered our favourite, the Double Bacon Burger, with two 110-gram beef patties, cheddar, bacon, tomato, burger sauce and BBQ sauce for 138 SEK (14 USD). We also tried their SSK Meal, featuring a Bacon Jam Burger with a 135-gram beef patty, cheddar, bacon jam, pickles and Mac sauce. It cost 185 SEK (19 USD), including fries, a dip and a drink.

The burgers arrived quickly and looked just as inviting as we remembered. The Bacon Burger delivered crispy bacon and deep umami flavours, while the diced tomato worked surprisingly well with the other ingredients, adding both juiciness and a distinct texture. The Bacon Jam Burger had a pronounced sweetness and smokiness that we really enjoyed. The thicker beef patty had a crispy crust and a very juicy centre, and together with the generous amount of bacon jam, the proportions between the beef, toppings and bun were really good. However, the Mac sauce faded into the background and didn’t quite get a chance to shine. Both burgers were generously seasoned with salt and coarsely ground black pepper, and we particularly appreciated how they had adjusted the thickness of the patties to suit the toppings. The flavourful bacon jam worked perfectly with a thicker patty, while the classic Bacon Burger had better proportions with two thinner patties, each with an amazing crust. The fries were well-cooked and almost impossible to stop eating, and the included Mac dip paired really well with them.

N.O.A.H’s Burgare just keeps getting better with every visit, and they continue to impress from their small car park on the outskirts of Södertälje. If you love burgers, they’re definitely worth a detour.

🇺🇸 @familyfriend20671 ★★★★☆

Familyfriend is located in a residential neighbourhood in South Seattle and serves American comfort food and Guamanian fusion cuisine. They’ve been named the home of both Seattle’s best smashburger and corn soup, and the restaurant itself has a cosy interior with a large and airy courtyard. The menu consisted of small plates, medium plates and mains, and we ordered the only burger on the menu. The Da Kids Kewpie Burger came with beef, cheese, onions, pickles and miso and cost 20 USD, including a portion of Truffle Shoestring Fries. We also added an extra beef patty for another 5 USD.

The burger was served on a small plate and looked really cute. The beef was juicy with a crispy crust, but we would’ve appreciated more salt to make the flavours pop. The bun was nice and surprisingly airy, but should’ve been toasted harder on the inside. Ratio-wise, it worked really well with double beef, and we think a single would’ve been too bun-heavy. The diced onions were exceptionally crisp and flavourful without taking over, but they’d also diced the pickles, which made them feel more like relish. So even though the flavour was there, we missed their natural crunch, and the burger felt a little too soft overall. The flavours were simple but tasty, and we liked that they dared to keep the burger this simple. Their truffle fries were thinly cut and fried until crisp. Luckily, they’d only been lightly tossed in a fresh truffle oil, which added umami without taking over. We genuinely couldn’t stop eating them.

Familyfriend is a cosy little neighbourhood restaurant that’s well worth a visit. Come for the burger, but make sure to order several of the medium plates to share as well. We tried everything from tacos and empanadas to the burger and their corn soup – and the latter really did live up to its award.
