Loffes Grill on the square by Stockholm’s Stuvsta Station is where the Swedish Tunnbrödsrulle was invented by Elov ‘Loffe’ Bråtfors in 1965. Nowadays, the grill kiosk has been replaced by Stuvstagrillen by Garo, which since 2024 has been run by the same owner as Östermalmsgrillen. Their menu is very similar to the sister venue in the city centre, and the biggest difference is that the smash burgers cost around 10 SEK less out in the suburbs. We ordered a double Cheeseburgare, with double cheddar, tomato, lettuce, red onion, pickles, ketchup and mayo. It cost 159 SEK (15 USD), including french fries and a soft drink.

Our burger looked decent, with a clear mix of grill kiosk vibes and a modern smash burger. The patties had a decent crust on one side, but hardly any at all underneath where they were soft and grey. Thankfully, the double 100-gram beef patties were well-seasoned and quite juicy. On the other hand, ‘double cheddar’ seemed to mean in total. We only got two slices of cheese in our burger, which was a shame as we would have liked to see more creaminess overall. The brioche bun had been fried a little on top of the crown but was still soft and squishy. The red onions were crispy but neither the lettuce nor the tomato elevated anything and rather drew focus from the other flavours and textures. Their pickles were crisp and added a lot of flavour, but were more like a sweet pickle than the salty kind they’d written on their menu. Overall, the flavours were a bit weak throughout the burger, and we would have appreciated more acidity in the form of a yellow mustard or some dill pickles. We got a large portion of thin fries, which were made a little more fun by the grill seasoning, making the meal feel really affordable.

Stuvstagrillen do a lot of things right, and are clearly an improvement to Stuvsta’s burger offering. The location near the train station does a lot, but they need some more attention to detail and innovation to really make them worth a detour.

🇸🇪 Mother of Wagon ★★★★☆

Mother of Wagon opened by Arboga’s train station in the summer of 2026, and is actually run by the mother of the owner of The Wagon Burgers & Brews in Stockholm. Besides the clever name, they also offered four burgers, all of which could be made vegetarian. We ordered a Cheeseburger with two 100-gram mustard-smashed beef patties, cheddar, onions, pickles, ketchup and dressing in a brioche bun. It cost 130 SEK (14 USD), and we also added fries for 30 SEK (3 USD).

The burger looked really good when it arrived, even if it had been assembled somewhat hastily with a lot of sauce. The flavours worked well, but all that sauce made it a little difficult to eat as the patties kept sliding around. The beef from a local farm in Örebro was generously seasoned and had plenty of flavour. However, it had been slightly overworked and was a bit too compact, and we would’ve preferred a more airy texture. The cheese had melted nicely over the patties, and we also appreciated that the fluffy bun had been nicely toasted on the inside, helping it hold together throughout the meal. We liked the finely chopped onions, while the pickles were crunchy, if slightly sweet. Although the mustard smash added plenty of flavour to the beef, we would’ve appreciated the acidity of American yellow mustard instead of the fairly sweet burger sauce. The fries came in a very generous portion and were thick and well-cooked, but slightly too heavily salted.

Mother of Wagon has managed to build a really solid foundation in just a few months, and the friendly staff also contributed to the experience. We’re really happy that it’s now possible to get a good burger in central Arboga.
