In English

Helsingburger opened their first restaurant back in 2017, and we have reviewed them several times over the years. This time around, we visited their large flagship restaurant outside Helsingborg, which was nicely decorated with lots of wood and leather details. We had a little trouble finding two perfect burgers, as many of the menu options were very similar, with only a few ingredients setting them apart. But after fiddling around a bit with the ordering screen – and in the absence of a classic cheeseburger – we ordered a double New York with cheddar, bacon, lettuce, red onions, pickles and a honey sriracha mayo, plus a double Chili Burger with cheddar, pickled red onions, lettuce, jalapeños, pickles and chili mayo. A menu with fries and soda cost 129 SEK (14 USD) during lunch, plus 34 SEK (3.5 USD) for an extra patty.

Our burgers showed a clear improvement compared to our last visit. The double beef patties had a thick crust that was slightly crunchy yet crispy and very flavourful. This was also thanks to the generous amounts of salt and pepper. And ordering the double patty burgers was definitely the right decision, ratio wise. The buns were also well toasted and really soft when we picked them up. Our New York had very tasty and crispy bacon, but the honey sriracha mayo was pretty anonymous and didn’t really come into its own. The Chili Burger was more enjoyable in terms of flavour, with lots of variety and several types of heat – although it could have been even spicier. The meat on both burgers ought to have rested a bit before assembly, as both the lettuce and the otherwise tasty pickles got pretty soggy from being heated up. And the onions would also have been crispier if they had been thicker. Our french fries were well cooked and properly seasoned, and the portion was really filling.

Helsingburger shows the strength of constantly evolving, and we are very happy to see one of Skåne’s veterans making such a strong comeback.

Gott utan gnista.

The burger chain Helsingburger started back in 2017 in Helsingborg and has since expanded to ten restaurants in Gothenburg, Malmö, Trelleborg och Ängelholm. We visited them for the first time in 2020, and found that they offered really good burgers made with local ingredients. During our latest visit to Ängelholm, we took the opportunity to visit their small premises to see how the quality has changed since last time. The menu was the same, with ten beef burgers and a handful of options with vegetarian, chicken and fish patties. This time we chose a Ostburgare with cheddar, onion, lettuce, pickles and house sauce for 104 SEK (10 USD).

Our burger arrived shortly after ordering and looked really nice with its melted cheese that contrasted nicely with the colourful vegetables. The patty had a nice beefy flavour and a high fat content that made it tasty, but the crust was a bit too weak and the beef itself was quite soft and loose. The bun had been toasted nicely, and was both tasty and felt nice in our hand. The large lettuce leaf stuck out a bit from the burger and was cold, and although we liked the crunch and dill flavour of their pickles, they were more sweet than salty. We finished our burger pretty quickly, but were a little disappointed that the quality had dropped slightly since our last visit.

Helsingburger still serves solid burgers and we were generally satisfied with our visit. But considering that we previously ranked them as one of Sweden’s 100 best burgers, we had expected something a little sharper than what we got. We hope that they regain their spark once again!

Helsingburger started out as a modest grill kiosk in the Swedish town of Helsingborg back in 2017, and has now grown to more than a handful burger joints in the Skåne region, with several locations in Malmö. They have a clear focus on quality, with local ingredients such as chuck from Sjöbo Slakteri. During our visit to their Helsingborg restaurant they had 11 different burgers, including vegetarian and vegan options. We ordered their cheese and bacon burger that contained a 160 gram chuck patty, cheddar, bacon, lettuce, shallots, ketchup och a house sauce. The price during lunch hours was 109 SEK (13 USD), including fries, a soft drink and a dip.

The burger looked really tasty, with nicely melted cheddar and a warm and sturdy bun. At first we thought that they’d forgotten our cirspy bacon, but it was just hidden under the cheese. The patty was juicy and tasted nice and beefy; a perfect fit with the creamy cheddar. We also appreciated the novelty of using shallots instead of regular red or yellow onion, and there was a reasonable amount of both ketchup and burger sauce. Overall we were really happy with our burger, even though the burger sauce was a bit bland and could have had a bit more kick to it. The bun was alright, but should have tasted more and been a bit fluffier. And some acidity would have been nice as well, such as dill pickles or something similar.

But with that being said we enjoyed our hamburger, and the price-point was excellent. Fingers crossed that Helsingburger expands outside Skåne so that more people get to taste their burgers.

Bar Luca is a cool and loud bar just a stone’s throw from the Opera House in central Sydney. They have been going viral for a while with one of their campaign burgers, which now has a permanent place on their menu. So when we were there, it was the obvious choice. The burger was called Blame Canada and consisted of a single beef patty, American cheese, maple syrup-glazed bacon, maple syrup aioli, poutine and fries inside the burger. The price was 20 AUD (14 USD).

Our burger still looked pretty good when it arrived, shiny from the maple syrup and with a patty with a decent crust. The beef tasted fine, even if it was a bit burnt in some places and would have benefited from a looser texture. The crown of the bun was a bit squashed, but it still held together surprisingly well and tasted great. The bacon was also unexpectedly crispy, and we liked the nice and flavourful maple syrup glaze. But it was very sweet overall with all the maple syrup, which literally dripped from the burger. This made the whole burger really sticky and quite difficult to handle – even if it also meant that we ate the whole thing at once. The fries that were under the patty itself were very soft and completely lacked crunch, probably because they were steamed by being placed directly in the burger. And we would have really preferred a bit larger cheese curds in the poutine, as the texture was a bit unappealing.

Blame Canada sounded very interesting on paper, and we can see why the burger has gone viral and become so popular. And even if everything was alright, it had too many technical mistakes to become a real favourite. But if you are in the mood for a sweet and sticky burger while listening to some loud music, Bar Luca is there for you.

Royal Stacks is a Melbourne-based burger chain that was founded in 2016 after their founder Dani travelled to the US and got a healthy dose of inspiration. They are still expanding, and currently have more than 10 restaurants that are decorated with plenty of well-known pop culture references. The five beef burgers on the menu are clearly inspired by Shake Shack, but with a slightly cooler attitude. We ordered a Bacon Bacon; a double burger with cheese, caramelised onions, double bacon, pickles, ketchup and mustard for 23 AUD (16.5 USD).

Our burger looked good, but we were a bit worried about the large amount of ketchup that was piled on top of the bacon. Fortunately, we were pleasantly surprised by how well the ketchup tied the flavours together, and the sweetness and intense tomato flavour really made their mark here. The beef patties were tender, tasty and well-seasoned, but the bun was a bit too soft and should have been toasted a lot more. Fortunately, it held everything together well, so it wasn’t a big problem. On the ingredients front, the cheese provided a welcome creaminess, and we also liked the strong dill flavour of the pickles – although we would have preferred them to be thicker sliced and to have had more of them. They were already gone halfway through the burger. The bacon was a bit too soft and would have benefited from being crisper, but despite the slightly pale appearance, it was cooked pretty well. The caramelised onions were also a bit too soft, and we would have preferred raw onions here for a more interesting texture. Overall, the burger had well-balanced proportions, although everything was a bit softer than we would have liked.

Royal Stacks is a nice Australian fast casual chain that serves well made and affordable burgers in a cool environment. They are definitely worth checking out the next time you’re in Melbourne.
