UppdateringarBenjamin Ljungberg kom på tredje plats på SM i hamburgare 2021 (där hela Burgerdudes-redaktionen ingick i juryn), och det var inte långt därefter som han började förverkliga sin dröm om att laga Gotlands bästa burgare. Gotland Smash Foodtruck öppnade i Visby under våren 2022, och i den ombyggda husvagnen står ett helt gäng med dedikerad personal som smashar burgare. Under vårt besök fanns fyra olika burgare på menyn, och vi valde en dubbel Gotland Smash Signature med två puckar à 130 gram samt ost, majonnäs, isad silverlök och dill pickles för 129 kronor. Vi beställde dessutom en portion pommes med dipp för 29 respektive 10 kronor.
Medan vi väntade på maten möttes vi av doften av stekt kött och svartpeppar, och det vattnades rejält i munnen. Burgaren serverades i väldigt prydligt skick, och såg verkligen aptitretande ut. Den rejält tilltagna stekytan glänste av den höga fetthalten, och vår första tugga bjöd på en otroligt saftig smakupplevelse. Köttet höll utmärkt kvalitet både invändigt och utvändigt, och de djupa tonerna lyfte verkligen smakerna. Grönsakerna och såserna hade använts sparsamt, och vi uppskattade den ganska minimalistiska användningen av dessa då de understödde övriga ingredienser. Det sesamtäckta briochebrödet hade stekts på fint också, och höll ihop relativt väl. Vår enda egentliga anmärkning var att det blev lite väl kladdigt av fett och köttsafter medan vi åt, och köttet hade mått bra av att vila litet grand innan burgaren monterades. Pommes fritesen var välfriterade och dippen smakade gott av tryffel utan att det tog över.
Vi kan med glädje säga att Benjamin har klarat sitt mål med god marginal. Inte nog med att Gotland Smash Foodtruck serverar Gotlands bästa burgare, de ligger även i toppskiktet i Sverige och är välförtjänta av vårt högsta betyg. Vi ser fram emot att följa deras utveckling och längtar redan efter vår nästa resa till ”öjn”.

Benjamin Ljungberg came third in the Swedish National Burger Championship 2021 (in which the entire Burgerdudes editorial team was part of the jury), and shortly thereafter he began working towards his goal to serve the best burger in Gotland. Gotland Smash Foodtruck opened in Visby in the spring of 2022, and the remodelled mobile home now houses a gang of dedicated, burger smashing staff. During our visit they had four burgers on the menu, and we ordered a Double Gotland Smash Signature with two 130-gram beef patties, cheese, mayo, iced white onions and dill pickles for 129 SEK (12.5 USD). We also ordered their french fries with a dip for 29 plus 10 SEK (3 and 1 USD, respectively).
While we waited for our food we were met with the mouth-watering smell of griddled meat and black pepper, and our burger was neatly built when it arrived. It looked super appetizing, and the thick crust was shiny thanks to the high fat content of the beef. Our first bite was really juicy, and the patty was nice and crisp on the outside and tasty on the inside, with a deep beefiness. The vegetables and sauces had been added sparingly, and we appreciated the minimalistic approach to these ingredients as they helped lift the rest of the burger. The sesame coated brioche bun had been heated on the griddle, and held together relatively well. Our only real criticism was that the burger was a bit too greasy and juicy, as the beef patties hadn’t rested enough before assembly. The french fries had been deep-fried just enough, and the dip tasted nice of truffle without taking over.
Benjamin has reached his goal without much of an effort. Not only does Gotland Smash Foodtruck serve Gotland’s best burger, but they’re one of the best burger joints in Sweden and we’re happy to award them with our highest grade. We’re looking forward to following their journey, and can’t wait to go back to Sweden’s largest island to eat there again.
