In English

Samsø Madsnedkeri is a restaurant from Samsø, a Danish island just north of Odense. We tried their hamburgers when they competed in Danmarks Bedste Burger 2021, where they served a burger called Madsnedkeriets Burger. At their restaurant, this creation costs 179 DKK (28 USD), which then also includes an order of french fries. The actual burger consists of beef, cheese, bacon, pickles, onions, mayo, tomato and lettuce in a brioche bun.

The first thing we noticed when we got our burger was how uneven everything was, as there was a thick tomato slice on the side of the burger that made it pretty lopsided. Taste-wise the grill flavours were very distinct, and despite the patty being pre-formed and not really smashed it had an alright (albeit a bit bulky) crust, and a slightly pink centre. It tasted pretty good and had a nice consistency to it. The brioche bun was also good, despite being a bit dry and completely untoasted on the inside. The bun was also a bit bigger than the pattty, and together with the haphazard composition this made the burger pretty difficult to eat. Apart from the thick tomato slice, the lettuce was bulky and a bit bitter, which made sense seeing as they’d used some of the leafs on the inside of the lettuce. The bacon was properly cooked at least, and both the mayo and the pickles balanced out the flavours nicely.

Samsø Madsnedkeri served us an alright burger, but they didn’t really wow us and didn’t really stand a chance of being awarded the prize as Denmark’s best burger.

🍔 Review № 1381

Black Bear Burger is one of the veterans of the modern burger wave in England, and we have tried their burgers several times since our first review in 2017. Over the years, Black Bear Burger has received more and more attention and hype, both domestically and internationally, and today they are one of the most well-known burger restaurants in all of England. They have locations at nearly 10 places around London, and we visited their restaurant inside the Market Halls Victoria food hall and ordered their Double Miso Bacon Burger – the same burger that won them the National Burger of the Year 2025 award. The burger contained double patties, double cheese, smoked bacon and their miso butter mayo, and it cost 15.8 GBP (21 USD).

The burger looked exactly as we remembered it, with pre-formed patties and a pale bun covered in a generous layer of sesame seeds. The bun was soft and fluffy, but just like on our previous visits, we felt that the crust-like amount of sesame seeds took over both in terms of flavour and texture. The meat was of high quality as always and had a nice and potent dry-aged character that they are known for. The meat could have been juicier though, as it felt a bit too compact this time. The bacon was super tasty and crispy, just the way we like it, and the onion also contributed a nice texture. Their miso butter mayo was very flavourful with its buttery, salty, and umami-rich taste, but together with the bacon and the beef, the overall flavour profile was a bit too salty. We would have liked to see some kind of freshness to break up the saltiness for a more complete experience.

We are very happy that a veteran like Black Bear Burger continues to deliver high-quality burgers year after year, and they are still a safe bet when you are craving a really good burger in London.
