In English

We visited Leytonstone Tavern in the Leytonstone district of East London in the spring of 2023. At the time, they had just been in in the National Burger Awards final, and we awarded them full marks and named them one of The World’s Best Burgers. During our latest visit to the beautiful 19th-century pub, we ordered three different burgers; the Double Cheese + Onion Smash with cheese, chopped onions, pickle & mustard relish and burger sauce for 12.5 GBP (16.5 USD), The Bobby Seale 2.0 with Mexican and American cheese, bacon, jalapeños, smoked confit garlic mayo and a jalapeño and pineapple jam for 15.5 GBP (21 USD), and the magnificent Bone Daddy with a large roasted marrowbone, blue cheese braised brisket, Guinness gravy, fried onions, pickles, shredded lettuce and a garlic confit mayo for 16.5 GBP (22 USD).

All the burgers contained double patties that were a little harder smashed than on our first visit, but they still looked just as inviting. The meat had a distinct dry-aged flavour and was incredibly juicy, even though it was a little thinner. The bread was shiny, fluffy and topped with generous amounts of sesame seeds, which gave it an extra lift. The Double Cheese + Onion Smash was a fairly simple cheeseburger that still stood out with its pickle and mustard jam that enhanced the flavours, and The Bobby Seale 2.0 offered a balanced heat and sweetness from the jalapeño and pineapple jam. Once again, the star was undoubtedly the Bone Daddy, and scraping the marrow from the roasted marrowbone was an experience in itself. The combination of marrow, blue cheese and the other components was absolutely phenomenal, and it remains our clear favourite on the menu. But all in all, all three burgers were amazing.

Leytonstone Tavern’s burgers are actually better than ever, and we recommend a visit here or to their new restaurant Tavern on the Hill in Walthamstow – not just for the phenomenal burgers, but also for the cosy interior and the local beer and cider on offer.

Bone me daddy.

Leytonstone Tavern ligger i stadsdelen Leytonstone i nordöstra London.

Leytonstone Tavern are located in northeastern London, in the Leytonstone area. Shortly before our visit, they were finalists at the National Burger Awards 2023. When we arrived there didn’t seem like there was anything special with the venue, but indoors everything was cosy and welcoming. They had five beef burgers on the menu, and we ordered a Double Cheese + Onion Smash with dry-aged beef, cheese, chopped onions, a pickle and mustard jam and burger sauce for 11.50 GBP (14.5 USD) and their finalist burger, the Bone Daddy with dry-aged beef, braised brisket, Guinness gravy, blue cheese, fried onions, roasted bone marrow, pickles, shredded lettuce and a confit mayo for 16.50 GBP (20.5 USD).

It didn’t take long after our order before we were greeted by two incredibly beautiful burgers. Everything was shiny, from the buns and beef to the cheese and sauces. And both burgers tasted so good that we couldn’t help but smile when we started eating. The bun was fluffy and springy, with an excellent flavour. It was also nicely toasted and covered with just the right amount of sesame seeds. The patties had a good crust but were still really tender and juicy, and the deep, dry-aged flavours really shone through. They were excellently seasoned, and the flavours in the burgers were incredibly well thought through. The cheeseburger had a high acidity but was still well balanced, and even tough the Bone Daddy sounded like a very heavy burger with many flavours, all the ingredients found their own place. Blue cheese can often take over in a burger, but not this time. The only sad thing was that the roasted bone marrow, which we got to apply ourselves to the burger, didn’t really stand out. The bottom bun was on its last legs as we neared the end of our meal, but we didn’t really expect anything else considering how messy our burgers were.

Leytonstone Tavern may lie on the outskirts of London, but they’re worth the detour for their incredibly tasty and decadent world-class burgers.

🍔 Burgerdudes Summer BBQ Burger
4 portioner / 30 min

Du behöver:
800 g grovmald högrevsfärs, 20–30 % fetthalt
4 hamburgerbröd, gärna briochebröd
8 skivor hamburgerost
Sweet Baby Ray’s Original Barbecue Sauce
4 salladsblad
4 tomatskivor
1 rödlök
1 dl ättiksprit, 12 %
2 dl strösocker
3 dl vatten Smör
Salt och grovmald svartpeppar

Gör så här:

🇸🇪 @noahsburgare ★★★★★

We first visited N.O.A.H’s Burgare in Södertälje in 2024, and they’ve been high on our ranking of Sweden’s Best Burgers ever since. Their small white food truck has now been replaced by a much larger container, and the menu featured around ten burgers. We ordered our favourite, the Double Bacon Burger, with two 110-gram beef patties, cheddar, bacon, tomato, burger sauce and BBQ sauce for 138 SEK (14 USD). We also tried their SSK Meal, featuring a Bacon Jam Burger with a 135-gram beef patty, cheddar, bacon jam, pickles and Mac sauce. It cost 185 SEK (19 USD), including fries, a dip and a drink.

The burgers arrived quickly and looked just as inviting as we remembered. The Bacon Burger delivered crispy bacon and deep umami flavours, while the diced tomato worked surprisingly well with the other ingredients, adding both juiciness and a distinct texture. The Bacon Jam Burger had a pronounced sweetness and smokiness that we really enjoyed. The thicker beef patty had a crispy crust and a very juicy centre, and together with the generous amount of bacon jam, the proportions between the beef, toppings and bun were really good. However, the Mac sauce faded into the background and didn’t quite get a chance to shine. Both burgers were generously seasoned with salt and coarsely ground black pepper, and we particularly appreciated how they had adjusted the thickness of the patties to suit the toppings. The flavourful bacon jam worked perfectly with a thicker patty, while the classic Bacon Burger had better proportions with two thinner patties, each with an amazing crust. The fries were well-cooked and almost impossible to stop eating, and the included Mac dip paired really well with them.

N.O.A.H’s Burgare just keeps getting better with every visit, and they continue to impress from their small car park on the outskirts of Södertälje. If you love burgers, they’re definitely worth a detour.

🇺🇸 @familyfriend20671 ★★★★☆

Familyfriend is located in a residential neighbourhood in South Seattle and serves American comfort food and Guamanian fusion cuisine. They’ve been named the home of both Seattle’s best smashburger and corn soup, and the restaurant itself has a cosy interior with a large and airy courtyard. The menu consisted of small plates, medium plates and mains, and we ordered the only burger on the menu. The Da Kids Kewpie Burger came with beef, cheese, onions, pickles and miso and cost 20 USD, including a portion of Truffle Shoestring Fries. We also added an extra beef patty for another 5 USD.

The burger was served on a small plate and looked really cute. The beef was juicy with a crispy crust, but we would’ve appreciated more salt to make the flavours pop. The bun was nice and surprisingly airy, but should’ve been toasted harder on the inside. Ratio-wise, it worked really well with double beef, and we think a single would’ve been too bun-heavy. The diced onions were exceptionally crisp and flavourful without taking over, but they’d also diced the pickles, which made them feel more like relish. So even though the flavour was there, we missed their natural crunch, and the burger felt a little too soft overall. The flavours were simple but tasty, and we liked that they dared to keep the burger this simple. Their truffle fries were thinly cut and fried until crisp. Luckily, they’d only been lightly tossed in a fresh truffle oil, which added umami without taking over. We genuinely couldn’t stop eating them.

Familyfriend is a cosy little neighbourhood restaurant that’s well worth a visit. Come for the burger, but make sure to order several of the medium plates to share as well. We tried everything from tacos and empanadas to the burger and their corn soup – and the latter really did live up to its award.

🇸🇪 Burger House Homemade ★☆☆☆☆

Burger House Homemade is located right by the E18 outside Kristinehamn and is hard to miss from the road. The restaurant is decorated like a colourful American 1950s diner, with a large menu where the burgers come in several sizes. The prices were steep, with a burger containing 120 grams of beef costing 189 SEK (20 USD) and a 200-gram version a whopping 289 SEK (31 USD), meaning an extra 100 SEK (11 USD) for just 80 grams more beef. However, we struggled to find a burger where the ingredients felt thoughtfully put together. In the end, we ordered a Cheeseburger with 200 grams of beef, double cheddar, caramelised onions, tomato, lettuce, pickles and burger sauce. Fries were included, but with a soft drink the final bill came to well over 300 SEK (32 USD).

The burger was sloppily assembled and covered in sauce when it arrived. The two smashed patties, made from Swedish chuck, had a lightly grilled flavour, but they’d been pressed too hard and had a compact, chewy texture. The beef was also oversalted and tasted really dull. In contrast, the burger sauce, onions and, strangely enough, even the pickles were very sweet, and none of the flavours worked particularly well together. The lettuce had been placed underneath the beef, where the heat had turned it translucent and limp. The sesame bun had been coloured yellow with turmeric and grilled hard on the outside in a sandwich press, while the inside was left almost completely untoasted. This made it soggy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. The result was a messy burger with poorly handled beef at an outrageously high price. The fries were at least okay and the portion was very filling, but that was the only positive part of the meal.

Burger House Homemade felt more like a trap for hungry motorists than a craft burger place with homemade burgers, and we found nothing that justified the unreasonably high prices. We recommend holding out a little longer and finding something tastier and better value further down the road if you’re craving a burger on your journey.
