Nanny Bill’s

In English

Vinegar Yard is one of many food markets in London, and they’re located just by the London Bridge train station. Food markets such as this one are often built in old barracks, where small vendors assemble to serve food and drink with a bit of shopping on a small area. And Vinegar Yard is of course no exception, and the reason for our visit to the other side of the Themes was the small burger joint Nanny Bill’s, who have several locations in the English capital.

We ordered a The Dalston Dip for 9.5 GBP (13 USD) plus three Mac ’n Cheese croquettes for 6 GBP (8 USD). The hamburger had two beef patties, mustard glaze, American cheese, caramelised onions, gherkin relish and burger sauce in a seeded brioche bun, and came with a pot of gravy that could either be poured over the burger or be used as a dipping sauce. The burger itself gave a strong first impression, seeing as the patties had a great crust. The bun was a bit squashed, but was lightly toasted and felt soft and fluffy. But flavourwise it didn’t live up to our expectation, mainly due to the compact and pretty dry beef patties. This was remedied somewhat when we dipped it in the gravy, but it wasn’t enough. And both the gravy and the burger were undersalted as well. Everything else was alright, but nothing really stood out. the warm and crisp croquettes were a nice treat though, and came served with a spicy tomato dip and some grated parmesan cheese.

We really enjoy a good food market, conditions just weren’t perfect this time around. And the ordering process left a lot to be desired as well. We’re hoping that these problems have been solved next time around.

🍔 Review № 1381

Black Bear Burger is one of the veterans of the modern burger wave in England, and we have tried their burgers several times since our first review in 2017. Over the years, Black Bear Burger has received more and more attention and hype, both domestically and internationally, and today they are one of the most well-known burger restaurants in all of England. They have locations at nearly 10 places around London, and we visited their restaurant inside the Market Halls Victoria food hall and ordered their Double Miso Bacon Burger – the same burger that won them the National Burger of the Year 2025 award. The burger contained double patties, double cheese, smoked bacon and their miso butter mayo, and it cost 15.8 GBP (21 USD).

The burger looked exactly as we remembered it, with pre-formed patties and a pale bun covered in a generous layer of sesame seeds. The bun was soft and fluffy, but just like on our previous visits, we felt that the crust-like amount of sesame seeds took over both in terms of flavour and texture. The meat was of high quality as always and had a nice and potent dry-aged character that they are known for. The meat could have been juicier though, as it felt a bit too compact this time. The bacon was super tasty and crispy, just the way we like it, and the onion also contributed a nice texture. Their miso butter mayo was very flavourful with its buttery, salty, and umami-rich taste, but together with the bacon and the beef, the overall flavour profile was a bit too salty. We would have liked to see some kind of freshness to break up the saltiness for a more complete experience.

We are very happy that a veteran like Black Bear Burger continues to deliver high-quality burgers year after year, and they are still a safe bet when you are craving a really good burger in London.
