The Duke of Richmond

In English

The Duke of Richmond is a gastropub located in Dalston, in East London. The cosy restaurant feels like a large living room, with relaxing muted colours. Their menu is packed with upscale pub food, but we obviously ordered both of their beef hamburgers; A Cheeseburger with American cheese, pickles and Thousand Island dressing for 16 GBP (19.5 USD) and the Duke Burger with Roquefort cheese, béarnaise sauce and confit onions for 17.5 GBP (21.5 USD). Hand cut chips were included in the price, plus some pickles.

Initially we were a little disappointed, because both burgers had a very dry bun, and the crown was almost sharp around the edges. It was a sloppy mistake that we didn’t expect given the high price tag. But much of this could be forgiven when we took our first bite, as the large patty was super juicy and incredibly flavourful, and lovely pink on the inside. A little more crust wouldn’t have hurt, but otherwise the meat was exceptionally good. Our simple cheeseburger was great, with classic flavours, melted cheese and a classic burger sauce. Unfortunately, the blue cheese burger was all over the place. The blue cheese was very prominent, largely due to it being the only cheese in the burger, and it was made even more powerful by the tarragon-heavy béarnaise sauce and the sweet confit onions. Thankfully, the hand-cut fries were crisply well-fried and excellently salted.

We visited The Duke of Richmond with very high expectations, but we weren’t completely convinced. With a softer bun, the cheeseburger would have received a very strong recommendation, but the high price and unbalanced ingredient choices made us a bit reluctant. They are still worth a visit for both food and drink, but the burgers are no longer the obvious dish of choice.

🇸🇪 Mother of Wagon ★★★★☆

Mother of Wagon opened by Arboga’s train station in the summer of 2026, and is actually run by the mother of the owner of The Wagon Burgers & Brews in Stockholm. Besides the clever name, they also offered four burgers, all of which could be made vegetarian. We ordered a Cheeseburger with two 100-gram mustard-smashed beef patties, cheddar, onions, pickles, ketchup and dressing in a brioche bun. It cost 130 SEK (14 USD), and we also added fries for 30 SEK (3 USD).

The burger looked really good when it arrived, even if it had been assembled somewhat hastily with a lot of sauce. The flavours worked well, but all that sauce made it a little difficult to eat as the patties kept sliding around. The beef from a local farm in Örebro was generously seasoned and had plenty of flavour. However, it had been slightly overworked and was a bit too compact, and we would’ve preferred a more airy texture. The cheese had melted nicely over the patties, and we also appreciated that the fluffy bun had been nicely toasted on the inside, helping it hold together throughout the meal. We liked the finely chopped onions, while the pickles were crunchy, if slightly sweet. Although the mustard smash added plenty of flavour to the beef, we would’ve appreciated the acidity of American yellow mustard instead of the fairly sweet burger sauce. The fries came in a very generous portion and were thick and well-cooked, but slightly too heavily salted.

Mother of Wagon has managed to build a really solid foundation in just a few months, and the friendly staff also contributed to the experience. We’re really happy that it’s now possible to get a good burger in central Arboga.
