In English

Fat Hippo is a British chain with restaurants in England, Wales and Scotland. We visited them in Manchester, where they serve a selection of their burgers at an entertainment venue called Lane 7, which has bowling alleys and karaoke booths, among other things. Ordering was easy via a QR code, but we noticed that their menu in the system did not quite match the printed menu inside the restaurant. Nevertheless, we chose two different burgers: a Wild Bill with double beef patties, cheese, smoked bacon, Cajun-spiced tater tots, jalapeños, BBQ sauce and ranch dressing for 16 GBP (21.5 USD) and a Fat Hippo Burger with double beef patties, cheese, bacon, chorizo, onion rings and Fat Hippo sauce for 17 GBP (23 USD). We also ordered Dirty Tots, potato croquettes topped with Fat Hippo sauce and bacon, for 7 GBP (9.5 USD).

Our burgers were generously sized, especially the signature burger, where the two giant onion rings added several centimetres to the height, more than we were prepared for. Here, the skewer actually came in handy, even though we generally prefer burgers without them. We were pleasantly surprised by the flavour profile, with the onion rings adding both crunch and flavour, and the chorizo adding a mild heat and plenty of umami. Wild Bill offered really tasty and salty bacon, but the jalapeño have a sharp heat that overpowered everything else. The beef didn’t really stand out, and with all the other ingredients on top, it lost its place in the overall flavour profile. The Dirty Tots were very good, and it was definitely worth choosing the ones with Fat Hippo sauce and bacon.

Fat Hippo serve rich and flavourful burgers, but they weren’t as well balanced this time around. We would have liked to see something a little simpler on their menu, but they are still well worth a visit.

Fett hippt.

Fat Hippo is a chain in England, Scotland and Wales, and in addition to their own restaurants they can also be found in other places such as the entertainment centre Lane7 in Manchester, with bowling and various games. The menu here was shorter than their usual offerings, but we’re guessing that the ambiance was a lot better. Despite the limited menu we couldn’t resist ordering two different burgers; an American with double beef patties, cheese, pickles, ketchup and mustard for 11.9 GBP (15 USD) and a PB+JJ with double beef patties, cheese, chunky peanut butter, bacon jam and a smoked chili jelly for 13.9 GBP (17.5 USD). French fries were included in the price, and we upgraded one of them to waffle fries for an additional 1.5 GBP (2 USD).

Our burgers looked really inviting, despite being run through with a wooden skewer. The bun, which was some kind of demi-brioche, was nice and golden and held together well throughout our meal. The beef patties were properly seasoned and even a bit pink on the inside, but  still a bit too tightly packed to get full marks. Our cheeseburger also contained far too much mustard, but the PB+JJ was a real treat with a decadent mix of peanut butter, bacon jam and chili jelly. Upgrading to waffle fries also comes highly recommended, especially considering that the regular fries were rather bland and the waffle fries were irresistibly crispy and tasty.

Fat Hippo have a few minor niggles that they ought to work on, but overall we were very happy with both the ambiance and their innovative and tasty hamburgers. And don’t miss their excellently creamy shakes for around 4.5 GBP (5.5 USD), which turned out to be an unmissable addition to our meal.

🍔 Review № 1397

🇺🇸 @localtide ★★★★☆

Local Tide is a hyped fish restaurant in central Seattle. And while most of the menu focuses on seafood, their burger has also become a bit of a talking point. They don’t take reservations, and when we arrived there were around 20 people queuing outside the small restaurant, with an hour-long wait. Luckily, there was space next door at Aslan Brewing, which served their burger and a handful of other dishes from Local Tide. We ordered their Smash Burger with beef, cheese, caramelised onions and mayo in a brioche bun for 10 USD, as well as a portion of Salt and Pepper Fries for 8 USD. We also tried their Salmon Sando for 16 USD.

After waiting around an hour for our food, our burger arrived neatly presented on a small plate. The bun looked a little flat but was lighter and fluffier than we’d expected. The beef was incredibly juicy and well salted, while the cheese was both creamy and flavourful. The caramelised onions were packed with umami and really enhanced the flavour of the beef. Both the bun and beef had a decent crust, although both could’ve been cooked a little more. Our main critique was that the burger would’ve been even better with a few more crispy components, and perhaps a bit bigger. The fries were like potato wedges and were incredibly well cooked. The generous portion was crispy and well seasoned, and their homemade ketchup was really tasty. The 16 USD salmon burger also impressed us with its fresh salmon fillet, great textures and fresh flavours.

It’s great to see a seafood restaurant serving burgers as good as the ones at Local Tide. The other seafood dishes are of course also worth trying, but make sure to arrive early and be prepared to wait a while for your food.
