Inte så hängmörat som vi hoppats

Slap & Pickle

In English

Slap & Pickle is a chain in Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester that can be found in various food courts and bars. Their menu boasts very dry-aged beef and we were very interested to see if they could live up to our high expectations. We visited them in the food court Society in Manchester, and ordered two different burgers. This is the One contained 40 days dry-aged beef, cheese, two slices of black pudding, lettuce, pickles and an ancho chili & apple sauce for 10 GBP (11.5 USD), and the Personal Cheesus consisted of två patties with 40 days dry-aged beef, cheese, lettuce, pickles and a burger sauce for 9 GBP (12.5 USD), and could also be had as a lunch offer with fries for only an additional pound (1 USD).

Our burgers looked good, but were run-through with a wooden skewer. The brioche bun tasted nice, but the beef was a disappointment as it tasted far from being dry-aged for 40 days. It was still good, but our guess would have been closer to a fortnight, and it didn’t live up to our expectations at all. We’ve also had quite a few black pudding burgers and know how tasty they can be, but here the flavoursome black pudding overshadowed by the thick layer of cheese and a sweet sauce that really took over the flavours in our This is the One. We immediately felt that their Personal Cheesus cheeseburger was the better choice, with nice flavours and consistency. Their v shaped fries were surprisingly good though, properly fried with with a deep crisp and loads of flavours.

Slap & Pickle are on to something good, but their mistakes are holding them back from being better than just good. If they’re going to stand out against the competition, they really need to fix these details and up their beef game.

🍔 Review № 1381

Black Bear Burger is one of the veterans of the modern burger wave in England, and we have tried their burgers several times since our first review in 2017. Over the years, Black Bear Burger has received more and more attention and hype, both domestically and internationally, and today they are one of the most well-known burger restaurants in all of England. They have locations at nearly 10 places around London, and we visited their restaurant inside the Market Halls Victoria food hall and ordered their Double Miso Bacon Burger – the same burger that won them the National Burger of the Year 2025 award. The burger contained double patties, double cheese, smoked bacon and their miso butter mayo, and it cost 15.8 GBP (21 USD).

The burger looked exactly as we remembered it, with pre-formed patties and a pale bun covered in a generous layer of sesame seeds. The bun was soft and fluffy, but just like on our previous visits, we felt that the crust-like amount of sesame seeds took over both in terms of flavour and texture. The meat was of high quality as always and had a nice and potent dry-aged character that they are known for. The meat could have been juicier though, as it felt a bit too compact this time. The bacon was super tasty and crispy, just the way we like it, and the onion also contributed a nice texture. Their miso butter mayo was very flavourful with its buttery, salty, and umami-rich taste, but together with the bacon and the beef, the overall flavour profile was a bit too salty. We would have liked to see some kind of freshness to break up the saltiness for a more complete experience.

We are very happy that a veteran like Black Bear Burger continues to deliver high-quality burgers year after year, and they are still a safe bet when you are craving a really good burger in London.
