In English

Kumpel & Keule is a meat specialist with two locations in central Berlin. The first is their meat shop in the indoor market Markthalle Neun and the other is their nearby restaurant. Both places serve the same burger, but it’s worth noting that they may sell out in the market and that you may have to book a table at the restaurant. We visited the actual restaurant and ordered their only burger, a Dry-Age Classic for 12 EUR (12.5 USD), plus bacon for an additional 3 EUR (3 USD). The burger contained dry-aged beef, deichkäse (a German, semi-hard cheese), tomato and mache lettuce, in a bun from the local bakery Sironi. French fries weren’t included, so we also ordered some with some dipping sauce for 7 EUR (7.5 USD).

The problems were apparent as soon as our food arrived. First of all, the beef hardly had any crust at all and looked really pale. It should also have been allowed to rest after cooking, as it had released its juices into the burger, making it wet. The beef itself had a nice and pink centre and a deep, beefy flavour, but it had hardly been salted at all which really held it back. The cheese lay like a chewy blanket over the meat and didn’t add any taste or creaminess, and the soft bun hadn’t been toasted enough, leading to it getting soggy and deteriorating towards the end of our meal. The hand-cut and double-fried french fries were incredibly crispy on the outside, but just like the beef they lacked salt. The accompanying ketchup and mayo tasted alright, but there wasn’t enough of it for the amount of french fries we got.

We left Kumpel & Keule disappointed that they’d managed to cook such a boring burger from such high-quality ingredients. If you visit them, be sure to try something else than the burger.

🍔 Review № 1381

Black Bear Burger is one of the veterans of the modern burger wave in England, and we have tried their burgers several times since our first review in 2017. Over the years, Black Bear Burger has received more and more attention and hype, both domestically and internationally, and today they are one of the most well-known burger restaurants in all of England. They have locations at nearly 10 places around London, and we visited their restaurant inside the Market Halls Victoria food hall and ordered their Double Miso Bacon Burger – the same burger that won them the National Burger of the Year 2025 award. The burger contained double patties, double cheese, smoked bacon and their miso butter mayo, and it cost 15.8 GBP (21 USD).

The burger looked exactly as we remembered it, with pre-formed patties and a pale bun covered in a generous layer of sesame seeds. The bun was soft and fluffy, but just like on our previous visits, we felt that the crust-like amount of sesame seeds took over both in terms of flavour and texture. The meat was of high quality as always and had a nice and potent dry-aged character that they are known for. The meat could have been juicier though, as it felt a bit too compact this time. The bacon was super tasty and crispy, just the way we like it, and the onion also contributed a nice texture. Their miso butter mayo was very flavourful with its buttery, salty, and umami-rich taste, but together with the bacon and the beef, the overall flavour profile was a bit too salty. We would have liked to see some kind of freshness to break up the saltiness for a more complete experience.

We are very happy that a veteran like Black Bear Burger continues to deliver high-quality burgers year after year, and they are still a safe bet when you are craving a really good burger in London.
