I-Kousya

In English

I-Kousya can be found in Tokyo’s Suidobashi district, close to Tokyo Dome, and is one of the more popular burger restaurants in the Japanese capital. They are only open daytime on weekdays, effectively making them a lunch restaurant. We’ve tried visiting them several times, only to find out that they’ve sold out for the day. But during our last visit we were met by a line of people – indicating that they still were open!

I-Kousya feels like a mix between a traditional Japanese restaurant and an American diner, and their menu consists of about 10 burgers and other dishes such as sandwiches and grilled chicken. The burger patties come in three sizes; 100, 150 and 200 grams, costing 1000-1500 yen (9-14 USD), including homemade potato crisps.

We ordered the eclectically named Grilled Marinated Mushroom Burger with Gouda Cheese with a 100 gram patty for 1 400 yen (13 USD). In addition to the cheese and mushrooms, we also got lettuce, onions, mayo, pickles and mustard on the side. The bun was fluffy and perfectly toasted, and we really enjoyed the smokeyness and the mustard marinade in the mushroom mixture. The meat looked great and had a nice grilled taste, but was overcooked and a bit chewy. The gouda cheese was nicely melted, but didn’t really taste of much. And their potato chips didn’t really add to the experience.

We’ll probably return to I-Kousya again, mainly thanks to the great bun and flavoursome ingredients, but then we’ll probably opt for 200 grams of meat.

🍔 Review № 1381

Black Bear Burger is one of the veterans of the modern burger wave in England, and we have tried their burgers several times since our first review in 2017. Over the years, Black Bear Burger has received more and more attention and hype, both domestically and internationally, and today they are one of the most well-known burger restaurants in all of England. They have locations at nearly 10 places around London, and we visited their restaurant inside the Market Halls Victoria food hall and ordered their Double Miso Bacon Burger – the same burger that won them the National Burger of the Year 2025 award. The burger contained double patties, double cheese, smoked bacon and their miso butter mayo, and it cost 15.8 GBP (21 USD).

The burger looked exactly as we remembered it, with pre-formed patties and a pale bun covered in a generous layer of sesame seeds. The bun was soft and fluffy, but just like on our previous visits, we felt that the crust-like amount of sesame seeds took over both in terms of flavour and texture. The meat was of high quality as always and had a nice and potent dry-aged character that they are known for. The meat could have been juicier though, as it felt a bit too compact this time. The bacon was super tasty and crispy, just the way we like it, and the onion also contributed a nice texture. Their miso butter mayo was very flavourful with its buttery, salty, and umami-rich taste, but together with the bacon and the beef, the overall flavour profile was a bit too salty. We would have liked to see some kind of freshness to break up the saltiness for a more complete experience.

We are very happy that a veteran like Black Bear Burger continues to deliver high-quality burgers year after year, and they are still a safe bet when you are craving a really good burger in London.
