El Perro Negro opened in Glasgow in 2018 and quickly became popular with locals. When they won the National Burger Awards in both 2019 and 2021, they gained a bit more international attention, and today they also have a restaurant in Edinburgh. We visited their home base in Glasgow and entered a small neon-lit hole in the wall. The menu was short with five meat burgers and we ordered two of them. A Classic with Cheese & Bacon with two 90-gram beef patties, burger cheese, bacon, caramelised onions, pickles and burger sauce for 12.50 GBP (16 USD) and their signature Black Dog burger with two 90-gram beef patties, burger cheese, caramelised onions, pickles, black pudding, bone marrow butter and burger sauce for 13 GBP (16.5 USD). We also grabbed a portion of togarashi-spiced french fries for 4.50 GBP (5.5 USD) and Crispy Fried Korean Confit Wings for 6.50 USD (8.5 USD).

Our burgers arrived quickly and looked amazing. The golden bun was fluffy and nicely toasted on the inside, with a sesame coating that added both texture and flavour. The beef was really tender and had a nice crust, with a deep beefiness. The bacon had a slight smoky flavour, but could have been a little crispier. The pickles in both burgers broke up the flavours nicely and gave a crispy texture, and overall both burgers had incredibly well thought out flavour compositions. Their black pudding in the signature Black Dog burger was given space without taking over, and felt very well balanced. It was also our favourite burger of the two, as it dared to go further with its ingredients in a way that really bowled us over. Our fries were well cooked with a real heat in the spice mixture that lingered for a long time. The wings were also incredibly juicy, with lots of acidity.

El Perro Negro serve up really high quality burgers with lots of flavour, and are a solid choice next time you’re in Scotland.

🇸🇪 @thellas_foodtruck ★★★★☆

Thellas is a food truck in Gävle that we’ve heard a lot of positive things about since they opened in 2024. The menu at the time of our visit consisted of four beef burgers and a vegetarian option. We chose the classic ”Thellas Cheese” cheeseburger with double burger cheese, silver onions, dill pickles, ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise. A single patty burger cost 115 SEK (12.5 USD), but we ordered a double 120-gram patty burger with for 145 SEK (15.5 USD) and also added 30 SEK (3 USD) for french fries and 15 SEK (1.5 USD) for a chili mayo.

There was a long line of people waiting for their food, and when the burger was served we were greeted by a well-composed and inviting cheeseburger. The first bite was incredibly flavourful and juicy, with a very clear crust on the patties. The beef was well-seasoned with a generous amount of coarsely ground black pepper. And the creamy cheese was delicious and nicely melted over the beef. Unfortunately, the bun was a bit of a disappointment, because despite looking good, it had been toasted for too long on the grill and lacked the fluffy texture we expect from a brioche bun. Their own-pickled cucumber was delicious and added both acidity and crunch, and we would have liked to see more of it so that it was spread over the entire burger. All the sauces did their job without standing out and were also in the right amount, without any one of them overpowering the others. We also liked the generous portion of crispy french fries, and the smoky chilli mayo was tasty – although it could have been a bit spicier.

Thellas undoubtedly serve one of the better burgers we’ve eaten in Gävle, and the service from the guys in the food truck was excellent as well. We definitely recommend keeping an eye on their schedule and visiting them if you’re in the area.
