Beak & Trotter

Mer gimmickartat än kreativt

Beak & Trotter

In English

Located near the beach in Valencia, Beak & Trotter is also open in Marbella during the tourist season. They have taken inspiration from the US with a European twist, and they claim to have the most creative burgers in Spain. So we ordered two different burgers; a Classic Cheeseburger with two 120-gram beef patties, cheddar, homemade pickles, caramelised onions and a burger sauce for 12 EUR (13 USD) and the more creative Bounut Orginal with a single patty, cheddar, bacon, burger sauce and a donut as a bun for 15 EUR (16.5 USD). We also ordered some french fries for 2,5 EUR (2.5 USD).

Both our burgers were served pierced by a stick, which was very comical as it went perfectly through the hole of the donut and did not add any significant stability. The donut itself was a little unevenly heated, but was fluffy, nice and flavourful. The bacon was crispy and had a mildly smoky note. The cheese was nicely melted, even though it wasn’t a classic burger cheese. The beef had a nice crust, but in both burgers we experienced it as overworked and quite chewy. This was much more noticeable in the double burger, and some more salt and pepper would have helped too. Our pickles were too sweet, and together with the fried onions they made our cheeseburger very unbalanced. Throughout the meal, there was something about the cheeseburger we couldn’t put our finger on, and it was only after we finished our meal that we realised that the bread in the cheeseburger had probably been brushed with something akin to orange juice. We don’t know why, because it was sticky and tasted strange without adding anything. Anyway, the fries were crispy and really good, and together with the bacon they were the highlight of the meal.

We can agree that Beak & Trotter make creative burgers, but unfortunately they fail to nail the basic flavours. And eating a pure gimmick burger is rarely fun.

🍔 Review № 1381

Black Bear Burger is one of the veterans of the modern burger wave in England, and we have tried their burgers several times since our first review in 2017. Over the years, Black Bear Burger has received more and more attention and hype, both domestically and internationally, and today they are one of the most well-known burger restaurants in all of England. They have locations at nearly 10 places around London, and we visited their restaurant inside the Market Halls Victoria food hall and ordered their Double Miso Bacon Burger – the same burger that won them the National Burger of the Year 2025 award. The burger contained double patties, double cheese, smoked bacon and their miso butter mayo, and it cost 15.8 GBP (21 USD).

The burger looked exactly as we remembered it, with pre-formed patties and a pale bun covered in a generous layer of sesame seeds. The bun was soft and fluffy, but just like on our previous visits, we felt that the crust-like amount of sesame seeds took over both in terms of flavour and texture. The meat was of high quality as always and had a nice and potent dry-aged character that they are known for. The meat could have been juicier though, as it felt a bit too compact this time. The bacon was super tasty and crispy, just the way we like it, and the onion also contributed a nice texture. Their miso butter mayo was very flavourful with its buttery, salty, and umami-rich taste, but together with the bacon and the beef, the overall flavour profile was a bit too salty. We would have liked to see some kind of freshness to break up the saltiness for a more complete experience.

We are very happy that a veteran like Black Bear Burger continues to deliver high-quality burgers year after year, and they are still a safe bet when you are craving a really good burger in London.
