In English

Idlewild Beer Café is a taproom belonging to Jönköping-based Idlewild Brewery. Like many other beer bars, they have jumped on the burger trend, and the restaurant is located in the Tändsticksområdet area near the train station. During our visit, they offered five meat burgers on the menu, including a lamb burger. We ordered two different burgers, a Triple Cheese with three slices of cheddar, fried onions, mayo and mustard, and an Ol’ Smokey with smoked cheddar, bacon, fried onions, lettuce, BBQ sauce and smoked mayo. The burgers cost 185 SEK (16.5 USD) each, and we also ordered a portion of fries for 25 SEK (2.5 USD).

There were a lot of people in the restaurant, but our food was still arrived relatively quickly. Unfortunately, we were greeted by a rather sad sight. Our burgers looked small, and we suspected problems from the start. The beef was grey, dense and tasteless, which was especially disappointing since they proudly advertised their locally produced meat on the menu. The potato bun had a neutral flavour, but the heel was like a sponge that quickly became soggy and mushy. The Ol’ Smokey had a nice flavour profile, with lots of smoky flavour from the crispy bacon, slightly sweet onions and a smoked mayo that rounded everything out nicely. The smoked mayonnaise was probably the best part of the whole meal. Our Triple Cheese, however, was unbalanced, largely due to the chewy and flavourless cheese that lay like a thick and chewy blanket over the entire burger. They had also used way too much mustard, which was overpowerering. The fries should have been cooked longer, and had a dull texture.

Ol’ Smokey really save Idlewild Beer Café from getting our lowest rating, as it at least was nicely balanced and quite flavourful. But we would probably stick to their excellent beers and order a few and small dishes if we returned.

🍔 Review № 1381

Black Bear Burger is one of the veterans of the modern burger wave in England, and we have tried their burgers several times since our first review in 2017. Over the years, Black Bear Burger has received more and more attention and hype, both domestically and internationally, and today they are one of the most well-known burger restaurants in all of England. They have locations at nearly 10 places around London, and we visited their restaurant inside the Market Halls Victoria food hall and ordered their Double Miso Bacon Burger – the same burger that won them the National Burger of the Year 2025 award. The burger contained double patties, double cheese, smoked bacon and their miso butter mayo, and it cost 15.8 GBP (21 USD).

The burger looked exactly as we remembered it, with pre-formed patties and a pale bun covered in a generous layer of sesame seeds. The bun was soft and fluffy, but just like on our previous visits, we felt that the crust-like amount of sesame seeds took over both in terms of flavour and texture. The meat was of high quality as always and had a nice and potent dry-aged character that they are known for. The meat could have been juicier though, as it felt a bit too compact this time. The bacon was super tasty and crispy, just the way we like it, and the onion also contributed a nice texture. Their miso butter mayo was very flavourful with its buttery, salty, and umami-rich taste, but together with the bacon and the beef, the overall flavour profile was a bit too salty. We would have liked to see some kind of freshness to break up the saltiness for a more complete experience.

We are very happy that a veteran like Black Bear Burger continues to deliver high-quality burgers year after year, and they are still a safe bet when you are craving a really good burger in London.
