Zigzag Burger

In English

ZigZag Burger opened their first unit on Hökartorget in Köping in 2020, and back then we named them Västmanland’s new rising star. They later opened in Västerås in early 2022, but we haven’t had the opportunity to visit this unit until now. Their small food cart is located at Fiskartorget next to Svartån, and their menu is short but sweet with a handful of different burgers on the menu. We ordered three double burgers; a Cheese Burger with American cheese, red onions, pickles, mustard, ketchup and mayo, a Hot Zigzag with American cheese, chilis, jalapeños, tomato, sriracha mayo and regular mayo and a Zigzag Original with American cheese, lettuce, tomato and burger sauce. They cost 106 SEK (9.5 USD) each, and we also added fries for 35 SEK (3 USD) extra.

The burgers arrived neatly wrapped in paper, and the soft potato buns looked very inviting. In addition to being nicely composed, it was also clear that the amount of ingredients was chosen with care. The first bite was packed with flavours, with an incredible crust. The meat was juicy and slightly pink in the centre, with a buttery taste. Our cheeseburger was well balanced, and our Hot Zigzag was super tasty with plenty of spicy ingredients that interacted really well with each other. We also appreciated that the potato bun was so soft, and also properly toasted on the inside. However, we would have liked some more crispy textures, and the burgers were quite small and as the ingredients were mainly in the front, we finished them a bit too fast. The fries were decent, but a bit expensive.

Zigzag Burger clearly serve the best burgers in Västerås and Köping right now, and they are an unmissable destination the next time you’re in Västmanland.

Zigzag Burger first opened on Hökartorget in the Swedish town of Köping during the summer of 2020, and the small, black food wagon has quickly become a favourite among the townsfolk. Their small working area has some limits, but this also means that their menu is nice and short. They had four burgers for sale during our visit, plus regular and sweet potato fries. We ordered their signature burger ”Zigzag Original” (with cheese, tomato, lettuce and sauce) and a ”Zigzag Cheese Burger” (with cheese, pickles, red onion, ketchup, mustard and mayo). They cost 79 SEK (9 USD) for a single 115-gram patty and 95 SEK (11 USD) for a double burger (200 grams). We also tried a ”Helgens” with four 50-gram patties, four slices of cheese, pickles, mustard, ketchup and mayo for 100 SEK (12 USD) plus regular fries for 30 SEK (3.5 USD).

All of their burgers come packaged takeout style, so they didn’t look their absolute best. But it was clear that Zigzag have done their homework; the potato buns were warm and toasty, the patties had a deep and crispy crust and there were plenty of toppings. Due to the small size of the buns, our burgers felt a bit cramped, and practically all of the toppings were crammed into the front half, and the back part just contained bread, beef and cheese. But everything tasted really nice, with distinct flavours, well-balanced ratios and great textures. Their homemade sauce could have tasted a bit more and we would have preferred juicier beef patties, and our favourite burger was their classic cheese burger. Their fries were crispy on the outside and well worth the money.

Zigzag Burger are really good at what they do, and were super happy to see yet another place in Sweden where we can get a really good hamburger. Don’t miss them if you’re anywhere near Köping. Or Västerås, for that matter.

Bar Luca is a cool and loud bar just a stone’s throw from the Opera House in central Sydney. They have been going viral for a while with one of their campaign burgers, which now has a permanent place on their menu. So when we were there, it was the obvious choice. The burger was called Blame Canada and consisted of a single beef patty, American cheese, maple syrup-glazed bacon, maple syrup aioli, poutine and fries inside the burger. The price was 20 AUD (14 USD).

Our burger still looked pretty good when it arrived, shiny from the maple syrup and with a patty with a decent crust. The beef tasted fine, even if it was a bit burnt in some places and would have benefited from a looser texture. The crown of the bun was a bit squashed, but it still held together surprisingly well and tasted great. The bacon was also unexpectedly crispy, and we liked the nice and flavourful maple syrup glaze. But it was very sweet overall with all the maple syrup, which literally dripped from the burger. This made the whole burger really sticky and quite difficult to handle – even if it also meant that we ate the whole thing at once. The fries that were under the patty itself were very soft and completely lacked crunch, probably because they were steamed by being placed directly in the burger. And we would have really preferred a bit larger cheese curds in the poutine, as the texture was a bit unappealing.

Blame Canada sounded very interesting on paper, and we can see why the burger has gone viral and become so popular. And even if everything was alright, it had too many technical mistakes to become a real favourite. But if you are in the mood for a sweet and sticky burger while listening to some loud music, Bar Luca is there for you.

Royal Stacks is a Melbourne-based burger chain that was founded in 2016 after their founder Dani travelled to the US and got a healthy dose of inspiration. They are still expanding, and currently have more than 10 restaurants that are decorated with plenty of well-known pop culture references. The five beef burgers on the menu are clearly inspired by Shake Shack, but with a slightly cooler attitude. We ordered a Bacon Bacon; a double burger with cheese, caramelised onions, double bacon, pickles, ketchup and mustard for 23 AUD (16.5 USD).

Our burger looked good, but we were a bit worried about the large amount of ketchup that was piled on top of the bacon. Fortunately, we were pleasantly surprised by how well the ketchup tied the flavours together, and the sweetness and intense tomato flavour really made their mark here. The beef patties were tender, tasty and well-seasoned, but the bun was a bit too soft and should have been toasted a lot more. Fortunately, it held everything together well, so it wasn’t a big problem. On the ingredients front, the cheese provided a welcome creaminess, and we also liked the strong dill flavour of the pickles – although we would have preferred them to be thicker sliced and to have had more of them. They were already gone halfway through the burger. The bacon was a bit too soft and would have benefited from being crisper, but despite the slightly pale appearance, it was cooked pretty well. The caramelised onions were also a bit too soft, and we would have preferred raw onions here for a more interesting texture. Overall, the burger had well-balanced proportions, although everything was a bit softer than we would have liked.

Royal Stacks is a nice Australian fast casual chain that serves well made and affordable burgers in a cool environment. They are definitely worth checking out the next time you’re in Melbourne.
