In English

When we visited Smashat in Strängnäs a few years ago, they had recently switched from being a more traditional street food restaurant. We were very impressed by their new focus on smash burgers, and when we returned after they had settled into their new venture, we were very excited to see if they had managed to maintain the quality. This time, we ordered their classic cheeseburger Royale with Cheese with cheddar, gouda, white onions, dill pickles, ketchup and mustard, as well as their new campaign burger Gatsby with cheddar, bacon, candied jalapeños, roasted onions, honey mustard and sriracha ketchup. The burgers cost 119 Swedish kronor each, including french fries, and we upgraded to double patties for an extra 30 kronor.

Our burgers looked really good, with nice proportions and soft buns. Upgrading to double patties gave the burgers an excellent ratio, and the two 100-gram beef patties had a really crispy crust and were well seasoned with salt and a generous amount of black pepper. However, the Royale with Cheese had a slightly weaker crust, and we would have liked the whole burger to have a little more crispy texture. Their pickles were very good, but quite thinly sliced. Gatsby was a very enjoyable experience, offering delicious flavours that really came together well. The bacon was very crispy and flavourful, and the sharp acidity and rich sweetness of the sriracha ketchup went well with the honey mustard. This flavour profile was further elevated by their candied jalapeños. The french fries were also of very high quality. They were well-cooked and very crispy, and tied the meal together excellently.

Smashat still serve Strängnäs’ best burger, and their affordable burgers make them an obvious choice the next time you find yourself in Södermanland.

Smashat in Strängnäs was previously called Galaxy Grill och Kök, but changed both their name and menu during the summer of 2022. Their menu consists of almost ten smash burgers, as well as varieties with chicken, halloumi and vegan patties. We ordered a Double Royale With Cheese, which was the closest thing to a cheeseburger we could find. It contained two 100 gram beef patties, cheddar, gouda, white onions, dill pickles and smash sauce, and cost 130 SEK (12 USD). We also bought additional fries for 19 SEK (2 USD). During lunchtime, a meal including a soft drink costs 140 SEK (13 USD), which felt like a much more affordable option.

Our burger arrived via a charming takeaway window, and we could immediately tell that it had been assembled with care. The two beef patties had a great crust, and the meat was juicy and well seasoned with both salt and pepper. The brioche bun was fluffy and warm, and nicely toasted on the inside. We appreciated the crunch from the white onions, which had been sliced with just the right thickness. And their house-pickled dill gherkins offered a great acidity and dill flavour, which we really appreciated. However, they were a little too thin, and could have been given some more room. The burger sauce was quite good, but we would have preferred a more classic flavour profile with ketchup and yellow mustard. The cheese was a bit on the boring side, and neither the plasticky cheddar cheese nor the gouda enhanced the flavours. The generous portion of french fries were fried to a golden yellow colour, and offered a well-salted crispness that made them definitely worth buying.

Smashat definitely serve the best burger we’ve had in Strängnäs, and we’ll happily return – probably during the lunch hours when the pricing is a little more appealing.

Bar Luca is a cool and loud bar just a stone’s throw from the Opera House in central Sydney. They have been going viral for a while with one of their campaign burgers, which now has a permanent place on their menu. So when we were there, it was the obvious choice. The burger was called Blame Canada and consisted of a single beef patty, American cheese, maple syrup-glazed bacon, maple syrup aioli, poutine and fries inside the burger. The price was 20 AUD (14 USD).

Our burger still looked pretty good when it arrived, shiny from the maple syrup and with a patty with a decent crust. The beef tasted fine, even if it was a bit burnt in some places and would have benefited from a looser texture. The crown of the bun was a bit squashed, but it still held together surprisingly well and tasted great. The bacon was also unexpectedly crispy, and we liked the nice and flavourful maple syrup glaze. But it was very sweet overall with all the maple syrup, which literally dripped from the burger. This made the whole burger really sticky and quite difficult to handle – even if it also meant that we ate the whole thing at once. The fries that were under the patty itself were very soft and completely lacked crunch, probably because they were steamed by being placed directly in the burger. And we would have really preferred a bit larger cheese curds in the poutine, as the texture was a bit unappealing.

Blame Canada sounded very interesting on paper, and we can see why the burger has gone viral and become so popular. And even if everything was alright, it had too many technical mistakes to become a real favourite. But if you are in the mood for a sweet and sticky burger while listening to some loud music, Bar Luca is there for you.

Royal Stacks is a Melbourne-based burger chain that was founded in 2016 after their founder Dani travelled to the US and got a healthy dose of inspiration. They are still expanding, and currently have more than 10 restaurants that are decorated with plenty of well-known pop culture references. The five beef burgers on the menu are clearly inspired by Shake Shack, but with a slightly cooler attitude. We ordered a Bacon Bacon; a double burger with cheese, caramelised onions, double bacon, pickles, ketchup and mustard for 23 AUD (16.5 USD).

Our burger looked good, but we were a bit worried about the large amount of ketchup that was piled on top of the bacon. Fortunately, we were pleasantly surprised by how well the ketchup tied the flavours together, and the sweetness and intense tomato flavour really made their mark here. The beef patties were tender, tasty and well-seasoned, but the bun was a bit too soft and should have been toasted a lot more. Fortunately, it held everything together well, so it wasn’t a big problem. On the ingredients front, the cheese provided a welcome creaminess, and we also liked the strong dill flavour of the pickles – although we would have preferred them to be thicker sliced and to have had more of them. They were already gone halfway through the burger. The bacon was a bit too soft and would have benefited from being crisper, but despite the slightly pale appearance, it was cooked pretty well. The caramelised onions were also a bit too soft, and we would have preferred raw onions here for a more interesting texture. Overall, the burger had well-balanced proportions, although everything was a bit softer than we would have liked.

Royal Stacks is a nice Australian fast casual chain that serves well made and affordable burgers in a cool environment. They are definitely worth checking out the next time you’re in Melbourne.
