UppdateringarVi har fått många tips om foodtrucken Smash N’ Grab och deras syskonrestaurang Östra Kyrkogatan, även känt som Ök’s, i Umeå. Vid vårt senaste besök i staden var endast restaurangen öppen, så valet var enkelt. Vi besökte dem under lunchen, och fick välja mellan tre fasta hamburgare och en kampanjburgare. Alla gick att beställa med antingen kött eller halloumi, och de hade dessutom en burgare med portabellosvamp. Föga förvånande vi oss för en klassiker; Dubbel Cheese som innehöll två köttpuckar à 110 gram, samt dubbel cheddar, gul lök, pickles, ketchup och majonnäs. Vi beställde ”rubbet”, alltså en meny med läsk, pommes frites och en dippsås, och betalade 199 kronor.
Det första vi märkte när vår läckra hamburgare serverades var den fenomenala stekytan. Köttet hade smashats riktigt hårt och var rejält tilltagen, utan att för den sakens skull bli bränd. Detta var mycket tack vare den höga fetthalten i köttet, och personalen berättade att det använde en hemlig blandning av lokalt kött med en fetthalt på 25–30 procent. Utöver den härliga stekytan så var köttet otroligt smakrikt och mört, samt generöst pepprat till perfektion. Cheddarosten var krämig, och de få andra ingredienserna var fint balanserade för en utmärkt smakbild. Det klassiska briochebrödet var mästerligt hanterat; snyggt rostat med en fluffighet och sötma som kompletterade de andra smakerna. Och syrligheten från deras egenpicklade gurka fulländade upplevelsen. Detta var en enkel burgare som inte tummade på något, och där alla de olika ingredienserna spelade en viktig roll.
Östra Kyrkogatan serverar tveklöst en av de bästa burgarna vi har ätit i norra Sverige, och vi tilldelar dem vårt högsta betyg med glädje. Vi ser redan fram emot ett återbesök i restaurangen, och hoppas såklart även att entusiasmen de visar i köket även märks av i foodtrucken. Grattis Umeå till denna burgarpärla.

We’ve received a lot of tips regarding the food truck Smash N’ Grab and their full restaurant Östra Kyrkogatan in Umeå. During our latest trip to the city the food truck was closed, but the restaurant was open and so we paid them a visit during their lunch service. Their burger menu consisted of three regular hamburgers and a burger of the month. All the burgers could be ordered with beef patties or halloumi, and they also offered a portobello mushroom burger. We obviously went for a classic; a Double Cheeseburger with two 110-gram beef patties, double cheddar, onions, pickles, ketchup and mayo. We ordered it as a menu with a soft drink, french fries and a dipping sauce, and paid 199 SEK (19 USD).
The first thing we noticed when our pretty hamburger arrived was the excellent crust on the patties. The meat had been properly smashed and had a deep crust that was just crispy enough without being burnt. This was mainly thanks to the high fat content in the meat, and the staff told us that they used a secret blend of local beef with a 25-30 percent fat content. In addition to the great crust the patties were super tasty and juicy, and had been expertly seasoned to perfection. The cheddar was creamy, and the other ingredients were well-balanced for an impressive end taste profile. The classic brioche bun was masterfully handled; nicely toasted with a fluffy sweetness that worked great with the other ingredients. And the acidity from their pickles really rounded everything off. This was a simple burger that didn’t take any shortcuts, and all of the different components played an important role.
Östra Kyrkogatan definitely serves one of the best burgers we’ve eaten in the northern parts of Sweden, and we are happy to give them our highest recommendations. We’re already looking forward to our next visit to their restaurant, and hope that their enthusiasm in the kitchen also is noticeable in their food truck. This is an unmissable burger destination in Umeå that shouldn’t be overlooked.
