In English

We have tried Hashtag Burger in Uppsala several times over the past few years, and during our most recent visit, we were very impressed by their high quality. They now have a small grill kiosk in Tunabackar and a food truck in Rosendal. This time, we visited the latter and ordered their Classic burger with cheddar, red onion, pickles, mayonnaise, mustard and ketchup. It cost 120 SEK (12.5 USD) including french fries, and an additional 100-gram meat patty cost only 20 SEK (2 USD) extra. We have had a somewhat mixed relationship with their cheeseburgers, because the first time we ate it, it had regular Swedish mustard, and the second time it contained garlic mayonnaise that disrupted the flavour profile. But this time around, it was very classic with yellow mustard and a regular mayo.

Our double Classic even had an even better patties this time, with a thin and crispy crust that glistened in the autumn sun. And in terms of taste, it was really good, partly thanks to the increased Maillard effect and also because they used plenty of salt and pepper, which elevated the flavours nicely. The pepper went excellently with the meat and was very distinct. Adding an extra patty was also an obvious choice, as the ratio between beef to bun was really well balanced. The cheese and mayo were very creamy, and it contained just the right amount of ketchup and mustard. Our burger was flavourful and felt homemade in its simplicity, bringing to mind summer barbecue evenings.

We were extremely satisfied with our burgers at Hashtag Burger, and feel that they have landed in their flavours. We highly recommend a visit the next time you are in Uppsala, and next time we will make sure to try more burgers from their range as their Hot Cheese is still a favourite that we remember fondly.

We’ve had a lot of mixed experiences when it comes to Hashtag Burger, not least in early 2024 when we finally got to try them and got a pretty sad burger. But everyone deserves a second (or third) chance, and during our recent trip to northern Uppsala we decided to visit them again. This time they had built a large outdoor seating area next to the burger kiosk, and we ordered two burgers from their menu consisting of seven beef burgers and one vegetarian option; a Double Classic with cheddar, red onions, pickles, garlic mayo, ketchup and mustard and a Double Hot Cheese with cheddar, red onions, fresh jalapeños, two chilli cheese tots and chilli mayo. They cost 135 SEK (13 USD) each with double 100-gram beef patties, and both fries and a soft drink was included during lunch. However, the soft drink selection was a bit uninspired with low budget variants.

The burgers we got this time were completely different from our last visit, because now we got both big and juicy creations with lots of crust. The patty that was soft and dull last time now had a crispy and well-seasoned crust, and was super yummy. There was a lot of flavour in both burgers, and we were particularly fond of the Hot Cheese which offered plenty of heat – not least from the crispy chilli cheeses. Our Classic had yellow mustard this time, which was a relief. However, the saltiness of the pickles took over this time, and all the flavours didn’t really gel in our Classic, perhaps due to the garlic mayo. But we were still very satisfied, and the fries were just as delicious as before.

We left Hashtag Burger full and satisfied, and quite relieved that they actually delivered this time. They are definitely worth a visit next time you find yourself in the northern parts of Uppsala.

#thanksfornothing.

We’ve heard about Hashtag Burger ever since they had a food cart in the outskirts of Uppsala, and now they finally have a more permanent location in the northern part of the city in the form of a small kiosk with some outdoor seating. Their menu consisted of eight beef burgers and one vegetarian option, and we ordered a double Classic with two 100-gram patties, burger cheddar, red onions, pickles, ketchup, mustard, and a garlic mayo for 135 SEK (13 USD). During lunch, both fries and a soft drink were included in the price.

Sadly, our burger was very carelessly assembled, and when we unpacked it we found it unexpectedly sticky with lots of sauce in the crown that made the ingredients slide around. The crust was also very weak, and the meat was soft rather than crispy on the outside. Our first bite also revealed that they used Swedish mustard instead of an American yellow mustard, which was a real disappointment. Even though the meat was quite soft, it still had a lot of flavour and tasted nice. The brioche bun was a bit dry, but this was at least helped by the sauces and the large amounts of cheese. The pickles were very flavourful and crispy, and the red onion had a nice crunch. The fries were the highlight of the meal, beautifully golden and crispy on the outside, with a lovely creamy interior and just the right amount of saltiness.

Our experience of Hashtag Burger was disappointing, and we left the black burger kiosk feeling rather downhearted – especially given all the praise that has been pouring in over the years. We have eaten much better burgers than this both in and outside of Uppsala and were unfortunately not at all impressed with what we got.

Bar Luca is a cool and loud bar just a stone’s throw from the Opera House in central Sydney. They have been going viral for a while with one of their campaign burgers, which now has a permanent place on their menu. So when we were there, it was the obvious choice. The burger was called Blame Canada and consisted of a single beef patty, American cheese, maple syrup-glazed bacon, maple syrup aioli, poutine and fries inside the burger. The price was 20 AUD (14 USD).

Our burger still looked pretty good when it arrived, shiny from the maple syrup and with a patty with a decent crust. The beef tasted fine, even if it was a bit burnt in some places and would have benefited from a looser texture. The crown of the bun was a bit squashed, but it still held together surprisingly well and tasted great. The bacon was also unexpectedly crispy, and we liked the nice and flavourful maple syrup glaze. But it was very sweet overall with all the maple syrup, which literally dripped from the burger. This made the whole burger really sticky and quite difficult to handle – even if it also meant that we ate the whole thing at once. The fries that were under the patty itself were very soft and completely lacked crunch, probably because they were steamed by being placed directly in the burger. And we would have really preferred a bit larger cheese curds in the poutine, as the texture was a bit unappealing.

Blame Canada sounded very interesting on paper, and we can see why the burger has gone viral and become so popular. And even if everything was alright, it had too many technical mistakes to become a real favourite. But if you are in the mood for a sweet and sticky burger while listening to some loud music, Bar Luca is there for you.

Royal Stacks is a Melbourne-based burger chain that was founded in 2016 after their founder Dani travelled to the US and got a healthy dose of inspiration. They are still expanding, and currently have more than 10 restaurants that are decorated with plenty of well-known pop culture references. The five beef burgers on the menu are clearly inspired by Shake Shack, but with a slightly cooler attitude. We ordered a Bacon Bacon; a double burger with cheese, caramelised onions, double bacon, pickles, ketchup and mustard for 23 AUD (16.5 USD).

Our burger looked good, but we were a bit worried about the large amount of ketchup that was piled on top of the bacon. Fortunately, we were pleasantly surprised by how well the ketchup tied the flavours together, and the sweetness and intense tomato flavour really made their mark here. The beef patties were tender, tasty and well-seasoned, but the bun was a bit too soft and should have been toasted a lot more. Fortunately, it held everything together well, so it wasn’t a big problem. On the ingredients front, the cheese provided a welcome creaminess, and we also liked the strong dill flavour of the pickles – although we would have preferred them to be thicker sliced and to have had more of them. They were already gone halfway through the burger. The bacon was a bit too soft and would have benefited from being crisper, but despite the slightly pale appearance, it was cooked pretty well. The caramelised onions were also a bit too soft, and we would have preferred raw onions here for a more interesting texture. Overall, the burger had well-balanced proportions, although everything was a bit softer than we would have liked.

Royal Stacks is a nice Australian fast casual chain that serves well made and affordable burgers in a cool environment. They are definitely worth checking out the next time you’re in Melbourne.
