Burger She Wrote

In English

Burger She Wrote has quickly become one of Los Angeles’ most famous burger joints, so we had to visit them while we were in California. The restaurant itself was anonymous with hard chairs and old-fashioned decor. They offered three burgers on the menu and we ordered one of each. So we got an Oklahoma Smash with smashed onions, cheese, pickles, mayo, mustard and ketchup, a Smash Burger with cheese, raw onions, pickles, mayo, mustard and ketchup and the special of the month, which on our visit was a Bacon Western Burger with cheese, bacon, onion rings, BBQ sauce and mayo. The burgers all cost 14 USD each with double beef patties, and we also ordered fried pickles for 7 USD and regular fries for 5 USD.

When our burgers arrived we were a bit shocked, because even though we were expecting really thinly smashed patties in true LA style, we weren’t prepared for the meat to be this wide and compressed. We didn’t even see the heel, which was steamed by the cooked meat and very soft. The bread was otherwise quite neutral and compliant and went well with the burgers. The beef was surprisingly tender despite its thinness, but we wouldn’t have minded a little more salt and pepper. The flavours on all of the burgers were really good, and all the ingredients were given just the right amount of space. The bacon in our Bacon Western Burger was really tasty and crispy, but the onion rings made the burger very high and a bit difficult to eat. Fortunately, they were delicious – golden and crispy with just the right amount of batter. We would have appreciated such a crunch in both our fries and our fried pickles, as both were a bit too soft for our taste.

Burger She Wrote serve an okay LA-style burger, but next time we would like a better beef to bun ratio.

🍔 Review № 1397

🇺🇸 @localtide ★★★★☆

Local Tide is a hyped fish restaurant in central Seattle. And while most of the menu focuses on seafood, their burger has also become a bit of a talking point. They don’t take reservations, and when we arrived there were around 20 people queuing outside the small restaurant, with an hour-long wait. Luckily, there was space next door at Aslan Brewing, which served their burger and a handful of other dishes from Local Tide. We ordered their Smash Burger with beef, cheese, caramelised onions and mayo in a brioche bun for 10 USD, as well as a portion of Salt and Pepper Fries for 8 USD. We also tried their Salmon Sando for 16 USD.

After waiting around an hour for our food, our burger arrived neatly presented on a small plate. The bun looked a little flat but was lighter and fluffier than we’d expected. The beef was incredibly juicy and well salted, while the cheese was both creamy and flavourful. The caramelised onions were packed with umami and really enhanced the flavour of the beef. Both the bun and beef had a decent crust, although both could’ve been cooked a little more. Our main critique was that the burger would’ve been even better with a few more crispy components, and perhaps a bit bigger. The fries were like potato wedges and were incredibly well cooked. The generous portion was crispy and well seasoned, and their homemade ketchup was really tasty. The 16 USD salmon burger also impressed us with its fresh salmon fillet, great textures and fresh flavours.

It’s great to see a seafood restaurant serving burgers as good as the ones at Local Tide. The other seafood dishes are of course also worth trying, but make sure to arrive early and be prepared to wait a while for your food.
