Gott’s Roadside

In English

Gott’s Roadside is a mini-chain in California, USA. They started out in Napa in 1999 and have grown to eight units in the surrounding area, with several restaurants in San Francisco. They pride themselves on their focus on local ingredients and the menu is quite extensive. We ordered several different burgers, which we sadly came to regret afterwards. We had a Double Bacon Cheeseburger, a Double Green Chile Cheeseburger, a Wisconsin mushroom burger and a blue cheese Double Western Bacon Blue Ring burger. A single patty burger cost around 13 USD and a double patty burger cost around 17 USD. We also tried several side dishes, such as garlic fries and onion rings for 5 USD each and fried Brussels sprouts for 7 USD.

Our burgers arrived neatly served on a tray, but we immediately noticed a few questionable details. Our Western Bacon Blue Ring had been replaced with another Wisconsin, and they had both been cut in half. The buns on these were of the ciabatta variety; chewy and unsuitable as a burger bun. The meat in all our burgers was dense and had a very boring texture. It tasted quite a bit like grilled meat, reminiscent of a fancier Whooper. The bacon was chewy, but we still thought our bacon burger with its egg-heavy bun was the best of the ones we tried. The accessories were all good and we also appreciated that we could flavour our soda. Apart from the meat and bread in all our burgers, the other ingredients were certainly acceptable, but the big problem was that everyone who ate the Wisconsin burgers got food poisoning later in the day, and our entire party was knocked out for several hours afterwards.

The combination of disappointing meat, the wrong burger and a serious case of food poisoning was pretty awful, and it’ll be a long time before we dare to set foot in Gott’s Roadside again.

🍔 Review № 1381

Black Bear Burger is one of the veterans of the modern burger wave in England, and we have tried their burgers several times since our first review in 2017. Over the years, Black Bear Burger has received more and more attention and hype, both domestically and internationally, and today they are one of the most well-known burger restaurants in all of England. They have locations at nearly 10 places around London, and we visited their restaurant inside the Market Halls Victoria food hall and ordered their Double Miso Bacon Burger – the same burger that won them the National Burger of the Year 2025 award. The burger contained double patties, double cheese, smoked bacon and their miso butter mayo, and it cost 15.8 GBP (21 USD).

The burger looked exactly as we remembered it, with pre-formed patties and a pale bun covered in a generous layer of sesame seeds. The bun was soft and fluffy, but just like on our previous visits, we felt that the crust-like amount of sesame seeds took over both in terms of flavour and texture. The meat was of high quality as always and had a nice and potent dry-aged character that they are known for. The meat could have been juicier though, as it felt a bit too compact this time. The bacon was super tasty and crispy, just the way we like it, and the onion also contributed a nice texture. Their miso butter mayo was very flavourful with its buttery, salty, and umami-rich taste, but together with the bacon and the beef, the overall flavour profile was a bit too salty. We would have liked to see some kind of freshness to break up the saltiness for a more complete experience.

We are very happy that a veteran like Black Bear Burger continues to deliver high-quality burgers year after year, and they are still a safe bet when you are craving a really good burger in London.
