Peter Luger Steakhouse

Peter Luger Steakhouse öppnade 1887 i Williamsburg, New York.

In English

Peter Luger Steakhouse opened in Williamsburg, New York back in 1887. In 1984 they got their first Michelin star, and they’ve held on to it for almost 40 years now. Williamsburg has slowly but surely become a very hip area, but the restaurant has kept its classic styling and interiors. Their menu contains a Luger-Burger for 20 USD, which is only served during lunch hours and consisted of a 1/2 lb beef patty in a burger bun. We added cheese and bacon for 2 and 8 USD respectively. We had problems choosing between french fries and the German fried potatoes for 16 USD, but the waiter convinced us to choose the former. While we waited for our food we got a basket with bread, butter and steak sauce to start with.

Our burger came served with all ingredients on the side, and after assembling it we almost considered eating with utensils, considering the restaurant’s status. But we let our instincts rule, and ate with our hands instead. The patty was the immediate star, with clearly dry-aged beef and an excellent crust. The bacon tasted amazing, but was a bit chewy for its size and pretty hard to chew through – a bit of a disappointment considering how expensive it was. But the cheese was shiny, prettily melted and well worth its asking price. The bun had a slightly too tall crown and a bit difficult to eat, and the heel got a bit soggy towards the end due to all the beef juices. The french fries tasted nice, but considering their price we regretted our decision a bit.

Peter Luger Steakhouse definitely know their meat, but the burger had a few problems that stopped it from achieving greatness. And with such a high price tag they can’t really afford any mistakes. But you should still visit them for a simple cheeseburger or some of their other meat dishes, because this was one of the cosiest Michelin star restaurants we’ve ever visited.

🇸🇪 @thellas_foodtruck ★★★★☆

Thellas is a food truck in Gävle that we’ve heard a lot of positive things about since they opened in 2024. The menu at the time of our visit consisted of four beef burgers and a vegetarian option. We chose the classic ”Thellas Cheese” cheeseburger with double burger cheese, silver onions, dill pickles, ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise. A single patty burger cost 115 SEK (12.5 USD), but we ordered a double 120-gram patty burger with for 145 SEK (15.5 USD) and also added 30 SEK (3 USD) for french fries and 15 SEK (1.5 USD) for a chili mayo.

There was a long line of people waiting for their food, and when the burger was served we were greeted by a well-composed and inviting cheeseburger. The first bite was incredibly flavourful and juicy, with a very clear crust on the patties. The beef was well-seasoned with a generous amount of coarsely ground black pepper. And the creamy cheese was delicious and nicely melted over the beef. Unfortunately, the bun was a bit of a disappointment, because despite looking good, it had been toasted for too long on the grill and lacked the fluffy texture we expect from a brioche bun. Their own-pickled cucumber was delicious and added both acidity and crunch, and we would have liked to see more of it so that it was spread over the entire burger. All the sauces did their job without standing out and were also in the right amount, without any one of them overpowering the others. We also liked the generous portion of crispy french fries, and the smoky chilli mayo was tasty – although it could have been a bit spicier.

Thellas undoubtedly serve one of the better burgers we’ve eaten in Gävle, and the service from the guys in the food truck was excellent as well. We definitely recommend keeping an eye on their schedule and visiting them if you’re in the area.
