Smashed

Smakrikt på Lower East Side

Smashed

In English

Smashed opened in the spring of 2020 on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, and quickly rose to prominence as one of New York’s best smash burger places. So when we were in the area we simply had to pay them a visit to see if this held true. The small hole in the wall had several burgers on their menu when we were there, and we ordered a double Classic Smashed with two patties, cheese, fried onions, raw onions, pickles and a burger sauce. It came served in a potato bun and cost 13 USD, and we also ordered some Smashed Potatoes for an additional 6 USD.

The restaurant had no indoor seating, but there were a few seats outdoors where we could wait to get our food. When we unwrapped our burger we were met with a somewhat messily assembled burger. The beef patty hung out on the side, and the cheese hadn’t covered all the meat properly. Thankfully it was nicely melted and added some excellent creaminess and cheesy flavours that worked great with the rest of the ingredients. We would have preferred our beef a bit juicier and with some more crust, but it tasted great and the burger sauce complemented both the raw and fried onions nicely. Since they’d wrapped the burger in paper immediately after assembling it, both the bun and the beef got almost steamed, making the burger a bit too soft for our liking. Even though the smashed potatoes were covered with a a tasty and spicy  seasoning, they were too warm and the pieces were too small for us to eat them in any reasonable fashion. We’ll probably skip them next time.

Flavour-wise, the burgers were great, and it’s mainly smaller technical details that are holding Smashed back. The competition is fierce in New York and they’re not our absolute favourites, but we still understand why they’ve got such a strong following.

🍔 Review № 1381

Black Bear Burger is one of the veterans of the modern burger wave in England, and we have tried their burgers several times since our first review in 2017. Over the years, Black Bear Burger has received more and more attention and hype, both domestically and internationally, and today they are one of the most well-known burger restaurants in all of England. They have locations at nearly 10 places around London, and we visited their restaurant inside the Market Halls Victoria food hall and ordered their Double Miso Bacon Burger – the same burger that won them the National Burger of the Year 2025 award. The burger contained double patties, double cheese, smoked bacon and their miso butter mayo, and it cost 15.8 GBP (21 USD).

The burger looked exactly as we remembered it, with pre-formed patties and a pale bun covered in a generous layer of sesame seeds. The bun was soft and fluffy, but just like on our previous visits, we felt that the crust-like amount of sesame seeds took over both in terms of flavour and texture. The meat was of high quality as always and had a nice and potent dry-aged character that they are known for. The meat could have been juicier though, as it felt a bit too compact this time. The bacon was super tasty and crispy, just the way we like it, and the onion also contributed a nice texture. Their miso butter mayo was very flavourful with its buttery, salty, and umami-rich taste, but together with the bacon and the beef, the overall flavour profile was a bit too salty. We would have liked to see some kind of freshness to break up the saltiness for a more complete experience.

We are very happy that a veteran like Black Bear Burger continues to deliver high-quality burgers year after year, and they are still a safe bet when you are craving a really good burger in London.
