Burgaren matchar inte dryckesnivån

The Spaniard

In English

The Spaniard is a cool bar in New York’s West Village, known for having espresso martini on tap and over 100 types of whiskey. We’d received several tips about their burger, and we found one on their menu; a Double Cheeseburger with cheese, lettuce, pickles and burger sauce for 17 USD. We also ordered some regular french fries and onion rings for 9 and 10 USD respectively.

Our burger came served on a small plate, and looked really inviting. The beef patties were tender with a nice crust, but taste-wise they didn’t really live up to our expectations as we’d hoped for a crispier outside. The sesame bun was fluffy, but tasted a bit burnt and after checking under the crown we saw that it was pretty black inside. Despite being a double burger we felt that the ratios could have been a bit better, as the bun took over a bit. But the flavours worked well together, and we liked their home-made burger sauce. Some more pickles would have been nice in order to even out the flavours, but overall this was a balanced burger that worked pretty well. Their french fries were tasty, but the onion rings were a tad too thick and tasted too much of batter and not enough of onion.

The Spaniard is a cozy and inviting bar with an impressive variety of drinks, so we really hope that they improve upon their burger to make the food choice easier whilst sampling the beverage menu. Because so far their hamburger doesn’t match the quality of their drinks.

🍔 Review № 1381

Black Bear Burger is one of the veterans of the modern burger wave in England, and we have tried their burgers several times since our first review in 2017. Over the years, Black Bear Burger has received more and more attention and hype, both domestically and internationally, and today they are one of the most well-known burger restaurants in all of England. They have locations at nearly 10 places around London, and we visited their restaurant inside the Market Halls Victoria food hall and ordered their Double Miso Bacon Burger – the same burger that won them the National Burger of the Year 2025 award. The burger contained double patties, double cheese, smoked bacon and their miso butter mayo, and it cost 15.8 GBP (21 USD).

The burger looked exactly as we remembered it, with pre-formed patties and a pale bun covered in a generous layer of sesame seeds. The bun was soft and fluffy, but just like on our previous visits, we felt that the crust-like amount of sesame seeds took over both in terms of flavour and texture. The meat was of high quality as always and had a nice and potent dry-aged character that they are known for. The meat could have been juicier though, as it felt a bit too compact this time. The bacon was super tasty and crispy, just the way we like it, and the onion also contributed a nice texture. Their miso butter mayo was very flavourful with its buttery, salty, and umami-rich taste, but together with the bacon and the beef, the overall flavour profile was a bit too salty. We would have liked to see some kind of freshness to break up the saltiness for a more complete experience.

We are very happy that a veteran like Black Bear Burger continues to deliver high-quality burgers year after year, and they are still a safe bet when you are craving a really good burger in London.
