Tom Wahl’s

In English

Tom Wahl’s opened their first restaurant in 1955 in Avon, Upstate New York. Today, they have seven restaurants in and around Rochester, New York State, and we certainly felt the historical flavour when we visited this institution. We ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger with extra tomato, lettuce, pickles and Wahl’s sauce in a kaiser roll for 8.89 USD and a Big Bopper with everything on it – i.e. onions, relish, pickles, hot sauce, ketchup and mustard – in a sesame bun for 10.59 USD. We also had French fries and onion rings for about 5 USD each. The thing that made us most happy was when we ordered pickles and the cashier let us choose from salty, sweet or with dill. We obviously chose the dill pickles.

At first glance, we were a bit sceptical when the burgers arrived, but we got a very pleasant surprise when we started eating. The meat was really tender, despite its appearance, and was very tasty. The buns were a little more uneven; the sesame bun was a little too soft and needed more toasting, while the kaiser bun was a bit dense. But they both tasted fine, and overall we were very happy with both our burgers. Our favourite ingredient was the Wahl’s sauce, which was probably the best classic burger sauce we’ve ever had. Our dill pickles rounded off the meal superbly, with a perfectly balanced dill flavour and a real crunch. Both the fries and onion rings were super crisp and complemented the meal beautifully.

Tom Wahl’s serve great burgers, and we must also mention their incredible soft serve ice cream and homemade root beer. And it was also great fun to visit a 1950s diner that actually originated in the 1950s.

🍔 Review № 1397

🇺🇸 @localtide ★★★★☆

Local Tide is a hyped fish restaurant in central Seattle. And while most of the menu focuses on seafood, their burger has also become a bit of a talking point. They don’t take reservations, and when we arrived there were around 20 people queuing outside the small restaurant, with an hour-long wait. Luckily, there was space next door at Aslan Brewing, which served their burger and a handful of other dishes from Local Tide. We ordered their Smash Burger with beef, cheese, caramelised onions and mayo in a brioche bun for 10 USD, as well as a portion of Salt and Pepper Fries for 8 USD. We also tried their Salmon Sando for 16 USD.

After waiting around an hour for our food, our burger arrived neatly presented on a small plate. The bun looked a little flat but was lighter and fluffier than we’d expected. The beef was incredibly juicy and well salted, while the cheese was both creamy and flavourful. The caramelised onions were packed with umami and really enhanced the flavour of the beef. Both the bun and beef had a decent crust, although both could’ve been cooked a little more. Our main critique was that the burger would’ve been even better with a few more crispy components, and perhaps a bit bigger. The fries were like potato wedges and were incredibly well cooked. The generous portion was crispy and well seasoned, and their homemade ketchup was really tasty. The 16 USD salmon burger also impressed us with its fresh salmon fillet, great textures and fresh flavours.

It’s great to see a seafood restaurant serving burgers as good as the ones at Local Tide. The other seafood dishes are of course also worth trying, but make sure to arrive early and be prepared to wait a while for your food.
