Fatz’s The San Franciscan

Men sedan öppnade Fatz’s The San Fransiscan i Mitaka-distriktet, ett stenkast ifrån Studio Ghibli-museet.

In English

When we first visited Fatz’s back in 2014 they quickly became one of our favourites in Tokyo, so we were sad to see them close in 2017. But now they’ve opened Fatz’s The San Fransiscan in the Mitaka district, not far from the Studio Ghibli museum. The new place is larger and brighter, and they now also serve pasta, meat dishes, mexican food and a large variety of beer.

But the burgers of course have their set place on the menu. They have 6 ready burgers, and also let you add your own toppings. The patties come in two sizes, 1/4 pound for 1400 yen (13 USD) and 1/2 pound for 1800 yen (16 USD), including french fries. We ordered a small ABC burger with avocado, bacon and cheese, and a large The Southerner with onion rings, bacon, cheese and bbq sauce.

The burgers were stacked high in typical Japanese fashion, with quite a lot of lettuce in the bottom. The patty on our ABC burger looked astonishingly small, but tasted great. Our The Southerner had much better ratios between the patty and the other ingredients, and the meat also had a nice pink centre. So we definitely recommend a larger patty. The bun was super fluffy and nicely toasted as well, and we also liked the thin and properly fried french fries. We ordered some deep-fried avocado as well, which comes highly recommended.

The burgers didn’t wow us as much as they did 5 years ago, probably since they’ve taken less risks in their new restaurant. They reminded us more of a lot of the other burger joints in Tokyo. But with that being said, Fatz’s The San Fransiscan are still a top choice in Japan’s heaving capital.

🍔 Review № 1381

Black Bear Burger is one of the veterans of the modern burger wave in England, and we have tried their burgers several times since our first review in 2017. Over the years, Black Bear Burger has received more and more attention and hype, both domestically and internationally, and today they are one of the most well-known burger restaurants in all of England. They have locations at nearly 10 places around London, and we visited their restaurant inside the Market Halls Victoria food hall and ordered their Double Miso Bacon Burger – the same burger that won them the National Burger of the Year 2025 award. The burger contained double patties, double cheese, smoked bacon and their miso butter mayo, and it cost 15.8 GBP (21 USD).

The burger looked exactly as we remembered it, with pre-formed patties and a pale bun covered in a generous layer of sesame seeds. The bun was soft and fluffy, but just like on our previous visits, we felt that the crust-like amount of sesame seeds took over both in terms of flavour and texture. The meat was of high quality as always and had a nice and potent dry-aged character that they are known for. The meat could have been juicier though, as it felt a bit too compact this time. The bacon was super tasty and crispy, just the way we like it, and the onion also contributed a nice texture. Their miso butter mayo was very flavourful with its buttery, salty, and umami-rich taste, but together with the bacon and the beef, the overall flavour profile was a bit too salty. We would have liked to see some kind of freshness to break up the saltiness for a more complete experience.

We are very happy that a veteran like Black Bear Burger continues to deliver high-quality burgers year after year, and they are still a safe bet when you are craving a really good burger in London.
