In English

Emmy Squared is the sister restaurant of the well-known Pizza Loves Emily, and can be found in several cities on the American east coast. We’ve named the Emmy Burger at Pizza Loves Emily the best burger in the world, and so far we’ve found Emmy Squared’s Le Big Matt to be almost as good. If you visit them outside of New York, you can also order both varieties, so during our most recent visit to Nashville, we had to order both a Le Big Matt to see if the quality held up and a Emmy Burger to see if it was as good as the original.

Both burgers featured double dry-aged beef patties, cheese and pickles in a pretzel bun, with the difference being that the Le Big Matt Burger contained lettuce, pickles and Sammy sauce for 18 USD and the Emmy Burger contained fried onions and Emmy sauce for 20 USD. We also added a very generous portion of waffle fries for 8 USD. Just like at both units in New York, we were greeted by a wonderfully deep and tender beef flavour. The patties were incredibly tender and slightly pink in the middle. The bun was very pliable and soft, despite its sturdy appearance. And the pickles were crispy with a well-balanced acidity. The standout difference between the burgers was the sauce, and for us the Emmy Burger was still the winner with its perfect balance of heat, sweetness and acidity. However, both burgers were delicious, and Le Big Matt delivered a truly classic flavour experience. The waffle fries were crispy and tasty and the portion was very generous.

At the end of the day, the original Emmy Burger at Pizza Loves Emily in New York is still the better choice, but if you come across the chain in another state, Emmy Squared is a phenomenal consolation prize. And make sure you leave some room for their amazing pizza as well!

Emmy Squared is a sibling restaurant to the renowned Pizza Loves Emily, and can be found in several cities on the eastern parts of the U.S. And seeing as we’ve declared that The Emmy Burger at Pizza Loves Emily is the best hamburger in the world, we’d be amiss if we didn’t check out the quality at Emmy Squared, especially as their hamburger is slightly different. Their Le Big Matt Burger comes with two dry-aged beef patties, cheese, lettuce, pickles and Sammy sauce in a pretzel bun, together with waffle fries for 26 USD. We also added bacon for an additional 3 USD. Observant readers will notice that there are a few likenesses and differences between the two, so it was very interesting to compare them.

We could immediately see that the beef, bun, cheese and pickles were just as amazing as in their other venue. The pretzel bun was soft but extremely enduring, and the beef was super juicy with deep, dry-aged flavours. The bacon was cooked to perfection, but we felt that the amount we got was a bit small for what we paid. The waffle fries were super crispy, and the main difference was the burger sauce. It was still tasty, but compared to the original it couldn’t compare to the taste explosions in the extraordinary Emmy sauce.

If you’re in New York and only can try one of these burgers, then Pizza Loves Emily is the obvious choice. But Emmy Squared holds its own and serves a breathtaking burger that can be found in more places throughout the states. And we also recommend that you make room for some of their fantastic pizza as well.

Bar Luca is a cool and loud bar just a stone’s throw from the Opera House in central Sydney. They have been going viral for a while with one of their campaign burgers, which now has a permanent place on their menu. So when we were there, it was the obvious choice. The burger was called Blame Canada and consisted of a single beef patty, American cheese, maple syrup-glazed bacon, maple syrup aioli, poutine and fries inside the burger. The price was 20 AUD (14 USD).

Our burger still looked pretty good when it arrived, shiny from the maple syrup and with a patty with a decent crust. The beef tasted fine, even if it was a bit burnt in some places and would have benefited from a looser texture. The crown of the bun was a bit squashed, but it still held together surprisingly well and tasted great. The bacon was also unexpectedly crispy, and we liked the nice and flavourful maple syrup glaze. But it was very sweet overall with all the maple syrup, which literally dripped from the burger. This made the whole burger really sticky and quite difficult to handle – even if it also meant that we ate the whole thing at once. The fries that were under the patty itself were very soft and completely lacked crunch, probably because they were steamed by being placed directly in the burger. And we would have really preferred a bit larger cheese curds in the poutine, as the texture was a bit unappealing.

Blame Canada sounded very interesting on paper, and we can see why the burger has gone viral and become so popular. And even if everything was alright, it had too many technical mistakes to become a real favourite. But if you are in the mood for a sweet and sticky burger while listening to some loud music, Bar Luca is there for you.

Royal Stacks is a Melbourne-based burger chain that was founded in 2016 after their founder Dani travelled to the US and got a healthy dose of inspiration. They are still expanding, and currently have more than 10 restaurants that are decorated with plenty of well-known pop culture references. The five beef burgers on the menu are clearly inspired by Shake Shack, but with a slightly cooler attitude. We ordered a Bacon Bacon; a double burger with cheese, caramelised onions, double bacon, pickles, ketchup and mustard for 23 AUD (16.5 USD).

Our burger looked good, but we were a bit worried about the large amount of ketchup that was piled on top of the bacon. Fortunately, we were pleasantly surprised by how well the ketchup tied the flavours together, and the sweetness and intense tomato flavour really made their mark here. The beef patties were tender, tasty and well-seasoned, but the bun was a bit too soft and should have been toasted a lot more. Fortunately, it held everything together well, so it wasn’t a big problem. On the ingredients front, the cheese provided a welcome creaminess, and we also liked the strong dill flavour of the pickles – although we would have preferred them to be thicker sliced and to have had more of them. They were already gone halfway through the burger. The bacon was a bit too soft and would have benefited from being crisper, but despite the slightly pale appearance, it was cooked pretty well. The caramelised onions were also a bit too soft, and we would have preferred raw onions here for a more interesting texture. Overall, the burger had well-balanced proportions, although everything was a bit softer than we would have liked.

Royal Stacks is a nice Australian fast casual chain that serves well made and affordable burgers in a cool environment. They are definitely worth checking out the next time you’re in Melbourne.
